  • Weird Windows networking quirk

I've dug arond, havn't found anything fr a work around on this one, and I hate MS (mis)knowledgebase.

I would likea straightforward solution, but I'd alo like to know why the hell this happens....

    Generic corporate domined windows network.

Xp Pro machine with an open share directory for general file sharing, all authentication handled by domain.

Sub folders created locally on machine, files dropped in etc.

All athorized users running 2k or xp can see all the shares, sub folders and files.

ME/9x users can see some of the folders, but not all, and generally none of the files.

If the foler is created remotely on a ME/9x machine then moved to the share directory, everything is fine and viewable by everyone.

You woudl think, all folders and viewing attributes would all be teh same, but something is different.

I've been stumped on this one for a while.

See http://hidev.com/technical/mixedos.h...e%20Win2000/XP - this is a very generic overview of the issue, but should get you pointed in the right direction. Basically, the problem has to do with XP being very WINS/DNS dependent and wanting to see an entry in either one for pretty much any host on the local network it wants to connect to or that wants to connect to it.
