I would suggest an Orinoco Gold, you might be able to find some decent deals on eBay.

Geez...Internet without wires....Wireless Technology perhaps? Thread moved to where it should have been originally posted.

FYI Hazard Toxic. You are teetering dangerously close to the edge with this post. First, in the wrong forum. Second, a question that you have obviously done ZERO research on. Tread lightly.

I suggest you search the forums for the word "wireless" and read all the results (yes all of them), this will give you some foundation to move from. Then I suggest you go talk to Mr. Google and ask him what he thinks about Wireless Cards, if you are really interested in how the technology itself works, then you can search for further information on that as well.

In the future, I would suggest you start by querying Mr. Google, he is much Smarter then Jeeves.

I am just wondering why or better yet how you got to this forum with that question? It is not a bad question, I mean everyone needs to learn some how, but how did it end up here? I would suggest as most people do, google. It is very helpfull, or maybe a different forum that is more geared to this question. To answer your question though you will need an 802.11 b card or adapter prefferibly made by Orinoco or Cisco but not limited to them either, honestly searching is you best bet.

Not true. He will need a wireless card and an access point. Neither is required to be 802.11b. In fact, he'd be better off getting 802.11g. Also, why do you say Orinoco and Cisco? If all he wants to do is get online wireless, there is no need for either of those cards. A cheapie linksys card available at any store will do the trick just fine...often for significantly less money.

Technically, an 802.11b will not give you wireless access to the INternet. It will give you wireless access to a WAP, which in turn needs to be on the Internet.

Check Sprint and Verizon for their cards which WILL connect you directly to the Internet.

802.11b was just a suggestion, I am not really a big fan of 802.11g as that is what I currently have and Im not very happy with it, true you do need an ap but I believe his question was about "cards", should have just left it at highwizards answer.

I think kree was mentioning those two chipsets because of their compatability value, for now all he may need is some card from bestbuy on the cheapo. But lets say he wanted to go wardriving with his new favorite new linux notebook, then the best supported are orinoco and cisco cards.

At least i think this is what he was hinting at.
The essential feature of complex behavior is the ability to perform transitions between different states ... Complexity is concerned with systems in which evolution, and hence history plays or has played an important role in the observed behavior.

yup, not to metion I just went out and bought a very el cheapo siemens card ($17 @ fry's) and found out why every one of them were brought back, discontinued, and red tagged. Range really sucks, But yes mindstorm thats what I was hinting at. Why go out and buy something that is cheap (and may I add not by much) that might not do or be compatible with what you want later. Once again its just a suggestion.

                        I don't know man, I bought a proprietary 108 MBPS g card last month and used it on a buddies b router, I was doing 600kbs/sec on his b... Imagine a 108 g router :)

is there not a strange device out there somewhere to assist in this matter ...?

perchance called a pringle tin or bean can

check out cantenna's on google...... you should be able to get a better choice of AP's to link to :)

                          enjoy

If you are refering to my post on range, the siemens card has no external antenna jack. Thanks for suggesting that cantenna though, would have never thought of it.

I would seriously consider rephrasing that. I KNOW you aren't ignorant enough to suggest that a person attach to an AP that he isn't authorized to...are ya? I didn't think so.

I am sure you read the rules and realize the consequences on the DC Forums for posting ignorant ass bullshit...didn't ya? I'm sure ya did.

I am not even sure why I am not just banning you for semi-retardedness...but I feel magnanimous today...you get a pseudo freebie. Don't fuck it up.
