  • RDF-based autofiring HERF gun

Okay, this is something that's a bit outside of the problem domain the "Wireless Techology" forum is intended to be about, but I think it's something everyone might enjoy thinking about.

What does everyone think of the idea of the idea of an autofiring HERF gun which uses Radio Direction Finding to detect when cars or other objects transmitting on a particular frequency pass by. It would not be terribly difficult... it can be done by a simple array of two antennas and two receiver circuit, with switches after the antenna cables enter an RF shielded enclosure which allow the antennas to be isolated from the rest of the circuitry. When the signal strength is about a preset squelch and the balance between the two antennas is at a particular threshold, the HERF gun would automatically fire for a preset period of time. The device could be powered by either the power grid or a car battery, and would be designed to be highly compact and portable, in addition to easy to deploy.

Such a device could be used by both law enforcers and criminals alike. Banks could insert a special RF beacon into a bag of money whenever that bank is robbed which triggers a HERF gun to disable the get away car. There's a seething cauldron of possibilities for illicit use as well...

I think it would be interesting to provide complete schematics for such a device. I don't believe it would be too particularly difficult to design, especially considering the complex portions of it can be purchased as kits, such as the tuner circuits.

I dont know if this is what you are talking about. If it is I dont know if I would particularly like to be around one in a car when it goes off considering its destructivness and irriversible effects. It is an impressive piece of technology. Might be nice to have a small low power one for the movies or library when people decide it is necessary to talk on thier cell phones. :)
If there is a Church of WiFi, then this is it's !

Yeah, it was neat to read about a 10kW HERF gun that guy built using a magnetron from Raytheon... that's putting military hardware to good use
