  • Questions regarding a new apple laptop

In around 2 weeks im getting a 15" Apple powerbook 'given' to me by the company i work for, basically 99% of the use ill get on it is personal, My question is, what experience do any of you have with the new g4 powerbooks, advice on programs to get, things to do to it to make it run better, anything really, would be great, this is the first apple thing ive got, so ill be fucked if i know what to do with it.

please keep the anti-apple sentiment to a zero level, i didnt ask for peoples views on how much they suck and stupid shit like that, Its a free laptop, I wanna make the most of it.

Another question, can you wardrive on a mac ? and can you connect to normal non-mac wireless access points, I have one at home and was wondering if i can get on my wintel network with it, or if i have to flash the access point or something with mac-enabled firmware or anything like that.

I was at this decision point 2 months ago. I choose to go with my usual Thinkpad and I'm pretty happy with it, as I thought I would be. However, one of the reasons that I went with the Thinkpad was that I thought there would be more hardware support for linux/unix and than a powerbook. I just spent the past two days unsucessfully installing Solaris 9 and slackware 9.1. Solaris install is sucking on the ethernet card install and video drivers, and the slack install is sucking on the Atheros wifi drivers. I can get a functional system, but its taking be back in the day when there was a whole lot tweaking to get shit to work.

Anyway, there is macstumbler for wardriving (as well as anything else you can find to compile) and you should be able to connect to wireless networks so long as they follow the 802.11a,b,g standards. That's what standards are for.

You might want to check out www.nevadaunderground.org

Thier messages boards are relatively dedicated to Mac user's and the site admin (freaky) is a really cool helpful guy.

I am assuming that is a Ti PowerBook. In my opinion it is better for wardriving as it has an 802.11b card in it or for it which means better drivers for the wardriving apps such as macstumbler, kismac, & istumbler. You should have no problem connecting to your ap.
Three small problems I've had with my PowerBook is cant seem to get my garmin gps to work with any of my gps apps such as any of the stumblers that I mentioned above, When I am connected to my home network I cant connect to any of my pc's but my pc's(xp & me/linux) can connect to my mac (fileshareing), and finally the default terminal is tcsh which in my experince is a little different than bash which I am more famillar with. I guess I could stay with bash but then I would not be learning anything new, you could say that these really aren't problems, they are projects. I don't really have any bad things to say about my mac, it is very stable, the last time I turned it off was the last power failure (about a month ago) we had I was not home and the battery drained when the power came back on so did the mac, the last time I logged out was probably two months ago. They are a pleasure to work on and the just work.
Here are some links along with what I have posted here. fink, macupdate, apple downloads, TCSH commands, FMA.
That about does it, good luck with your new mac.

You lucky fucker, I knew they were going to come out with a new 15" PowerBook but got to excited when the 12 and 17 inch models came out. Maybe I can save enough to get one this year.
