Linux and AP

Heya, Just a question for you wireless heads out there. This is my problem, I am running:

Dualboot: Mandrake9.2 and WindowsME,

I have a DWL-120+ wireless USB card that connects me to the network in windows, however, dlink is stingy and has not put out any linux drivers for this device. I know their is a soundforge project but was unable to get it working properly. I also have a DWL-800 AP+...and this has a LAN ethernet port on the back, (Bare with me, as I am learning about wireless!) Is it possible just to connect my ethernet card (eth0) to the AP...would this give me network access? I haven't been able to find much documentation on this sort of thing, probobly because it is a very stupid question. Well, Thanks in advance.

I've been using freeBSD for a little bit and I know that some of the commands are similar, first you gotta know if your Linux has the module built into the kernel in BSD its:

kldstat -v

also check to see if your pccard is enabled:

cat /etc/rc.conf

enable pccard:

edit /etc/rc.conf
pccard enable="YES"

wepkey (if you have, noticed on the spec it has 40-bit wep):

edit /etc/rc.conf
ifconfig_wi0="wepmode on wepkey 0x000000" (=your wep key)

dhcp:
ifconfig_wi0="DHCP"

to jump start your card:

ifconfig wi0 inet x.x.x.x.x netmask x.x.x.x.x

this should help you out however you mentioned that they dont have drivers built...so you either gotta build that driver yourself, or get a different card, the way to build it is beyond me, but thats how you set it up...

Oh crap I may have read this wrong, is what your talking about a PC or a Laptop?? If your going to hardwire from your AP, you can plug a cat5 into the AP, then plug the ethernet card into your laptop, and you should be able to get network access straight up, but be sure to check your ifconfig for settings and netstat to see if you have a ip... sorry I tend to read things wrong at times =)

Yeah, I just want to use the ethernet card straight to the AP, But I don't seem to be getting an IP assigned to me even though i am using dhcp.

..?

Let me rephrase

Allow me to backup, and ask the fundamental question:

Is the ethernet port on the back of the access point, used only for configuration or can it be used also to provide internet/network access to a box?

is what your talking about a PC or a Laptop

You should read your manual . But to answer your question, yes. When its connected only to your laptop you can use it as a bridge to an access point. The access point or the router behind the ap will be the one handing out IPs, not your dlink.

hmm, I seem to be able to ping my ethernet card and the AP connected to it, but cannot get outside to the router.

Check your ip sec, filters, acl's.... or maybe your driver is just lame and you need to load a new / better one.

Ahh, thanks for the help guys I was under the assumption that the Access Point could be used as a wireless client, (as 3 dumb-ass D-LINK support guys told me) Finally, got ahold of a support guy that knew what he was talking about and he assured me it cannot be ran as a client, only a repeater or limited AP...he recommended buying a linksys card, and download the wlan-ng opensource drivers...DLINK....pathetic.
