    Movies at DC

    Previous DC have had movies available for view. Earliest Cons with movies had people bringing in their own TV/VCR and playing what they liked for others. Some later cons (DC5 and 6) put some movies on display with a simple large screen TV in a small room playing War Games along with other cult films, and a few years back it was the ever-so-almost amusing Trackdown/Cybertraque on a big screen in one of the track-forums.

    Many of the old-timers will remember Clifford Stoll, and his book "The CooCoo's Egg" and some may even recall that PBS thing he did "The KGB My Computer and Me" but how many of you know about the German Film, "23 - Nichts ist wie es scheint" (23 Nothing is as it seems) which appears to be a very *very* loosely created story based on 4 of the people involved on the West German side of things.

    Nice film. Lots of old tech, and more "hacker" stuff than most any other movie from Hollywood on "hackers." (Dictionary Attacks, Trojan Horse, more. Even a guest appearance of a PDP-11 along with some old Atari and Comodore.)

    One of the computer conventions they show us on the film reminds people of many DC gatherings in the earlier years.

    I think that downloadable English subtitles could be available for this movie in as little as 2-4 weeks. Maybe this film can be included as one to show this year.

    What other movies would be good for them to include? (Not everyone has been able to stay at the Alexis Park to watch the in-house programming.)

    I actually have 23 on DVD. Its a very good movie (well, if you speak german). They do play up the 'evil hacker' thing a bit though. English subtitles would rock. As far as who handles it, talk to Grifter, as its his crew that has been doing the DC Movies the last few years. The URL for the official DCTeeVee site is http://www.defcontv.org/

      Excellent! Thanks for the information. I'll go check it out.

      We figure if we release subtitles for this soon, any constructive criticism can be used to rework the text and cite contributors in subtitle credits in time for the con.

      Once they are up, I'll try to leave a URL for them here.

        We'll be doing the DCMC again this year (2600SLC/DC801 crew), and instead of the stock material we did at DC11, we're going to change it up and play material of different types, perhaps taking the requests a bit more seriously now that we're confident that we can make it work.

        I'm sure Grifter will post when the form is up for this year, so keep your eyes peeled on the link noid posted.

            I visited the link provided by Noid and found a form to submit suggestions. Assuming the form is for present suggestions and not something from a previous Con, I went ahead and posted "23" as a suggestion.

            I also have this on DVD and DVD-R. The DVD is a region 2 in PAL format, of excellent video quality and is a legal copy but has no subtitles (no German, no English-- NO subtitles.) The DVD-R is region 0 and NTSC format and is not a very high quality video.

            The ".sub" file is being generated to work with the avi file mentioned in the first post and mplayer (what I am using to test them) as well as MS Windows Media Player (what my other associates are using to test them with.) Unfortunately, a common standard for these text-based sub files is to use a frame-count for specifying when to cause subtitles to appear. As a result, this does not work with .mpg, but does with .mov/.qt and .avi. Also, any new rip with better quality (more frames) will require a re-indexing of all indexed frame-counts for each subtitle to match the frame-count of the new rip. (Trivial process for a coder with basic algebra-fu.)

            I expect all of you know about the above paragraph. I did not write about it for you. I wrote about it for that 1 user sitting in the back who had their hand up. ;-)

                  As promised. The subtitles are being uploaded to a number of subtitle sites and being posted on a web page for download.

                  We strongly desire suggestions and constructive criticism. We want to try to have the subtitles convey a sense from the film that is technologically accurate as well as consistent with the content of the film.

                  Please review these subtitles and pass suggestions to us so that we may make changes in time for the Con. (Subtitles include content for the hearing impaired, but we know we can do better.)
