Of all the places I would associate with needing helpdesk support... Inverness doesn't spring straight to mind. I'm assuming this is for support of staff involved with North Sea drilling, though.

I receive offers from all over, they are mainly oil and gas related positions though. Once in a while, like this one , there are offers outside my field that friends pass along to me. There are many companies in the oil industry that are employing people with high computer skills. www.rigzone.com offers a free resume posting service for positions world wide. Many engineering firms are employing programmers to develop down hole applications. I thought I would pass this one along because I am not qualified but I thought that some forum member seeking employment might be interested. Oilwell drilling is not just a matter of punching a hole in the ground and hoping to find oil. It is a highly technical field. Thanks for the info Floydr47, I plan on putting out the ol' feelers for the job market soon and going abroad is a nice option. How likely are they to hire from outside the UK? I am sure if I was in India it would not be a problem, but what about the states?

In my line of work (Drilling Dept.), I have never had any problems hiring out through the U.K. I worked the North Sea for a while, 1 tour of Africa (Angola), and a couple trips to South America. It keeps getting easier to put your skills out to the world market. The worlds just not as big as when I was a lad. Good Luck, Che.

I just wanted to add that the reason I started this thread was because, when I had mentioned that I was considering switching fields, Highwiz had recommended that I read an article from slash.dot. The article had a lot of people bitching about the lack of high paying jobs in the IT industry. My original post was to exemplify that there are opportunities outside the box. I am sure that if a person goes to the same watering holes as the rest of the herd, i.e., Microsoft, AT&T, HP, govt. work, etc. There probably is a job shortage. I figure if a man is intelligent enough to write complex programs then he/she is intelligent enough to create opportunity. When the oilfield went from boom to bust in 1980, I continued to work. It was because I have never been afraid to pick up a sledge hammer as quickly as I would pick up an ink pen. No work is menial if it puts groceries on the table and keeps a roof over your head. Nothing makes me madder than to walk into an oilfield bar and a roughneck half my age is bumming a beer and telling me there is no work in the field and he can't find a job. End of sermon. I'll shut up now.
