  • DC317 on the way.

i am currently in the process of starting DC317 in Indianapolis, IN Area. Right now i have 12 people who want to join... but... no meeting spot :-P. makes it kind of tough since johnson county/marion county are republican. i am hoping to start a meet in the johnson county library if i can get the community room booked. if anyone from indiana wants to join, has an idea for a meeting spot, or has ideas for topics we can discuss, please email me at admin@hackers-elite.com . i don't have the site up yet, but the address will be www.hackers-elite.com . i will probally put a a main site with invision board forums similar to this one.

I'm also wondering how you're involved with Defcon per your /me directory... I don't recall seeing you on staff there before.

After taking a peek, I'm a bit curious... http://www.hackers-elite.com/popcorn/pop.html do you plan to open up a spot at the con to sell the popcorn and chocolate in question? is it an undercover fencing operation? HackerC0rn(c), the official snack of the elite hacker.

lol, no, i use www.hackers-elite.com as a test site. the popcorn thing was a site design i made for somebody and sold it to em as a template. i am going to delete it all when i get the site designed.

what i mean by the counties being republican is that they most likely won't let me use the public library unless i pay for my time there.

(nothing against republicans, i am republican)

Its not that I was calling you out, it was that i was wondering how a countys political affiliation would affect your meetings. So the republican counties make you pay for a meeting space at the library? are there any 'democrat' counties that dont nearby?

Yah... Also, why not use someplace public that won't charge? A lot of meetings take place in coffeehouses, restaurants, or other public locations (train stations, mall food courts, etc.) that don't charge and have room for a reasonable number of people.

i may stop by the 2600 meeting in indianapolis and see how they run their meetings to get an idea of how i should run mine. i used to be bpa chapter president, and i kept my meetings under extreme control. i feel like a coffee shop or something would have too many distractions. I'm not used to running meetings that are more social and less professional...

I want them to be serious, but on the other hand, not boring.

Try to find a place with a back room or alcove that you can use - it'll help to keep everyone corralled into the same general location, which will also help with keeping attention focused onto the meeting at hand. As an example, LA2600 meets in a train station, moves on to a deli, then on to a Denny's. The train station is the least-conducive to holding an actual meeting, but the other two locations let us use areas in the back of the restaurant, which is where the majority of the technical talk goes on.

As an aside, the real distraction at any location seems to be Internet access - this is why we specifically don't meet at an Internet cafe or similar. People do bring laptops and show off stuff they're working on or ask questions related to issues they're running into, but not having net access keeps things more interactive between everyone. YMMV.

Encourage people to bring things to show or discuss and to interact. As long as everyone's got something to talk about, they'll be able to sustain the momentum.
