haha, i acually met kevin rose, nice guy, think he is alittle in over his head, and the new version of knoppix has me shocked I love it, default wm is fluxbox and everything is suprisingly functional. I still have to upload the ck n' kevin rose pics, not sure what my friend did with them.

I went with CK and some other members of DC707...
It sucked ramezi wasn't there... too bad cuz i really wanted him to give me a 'hacker tip' or make my laptop explode....
DD was there, and Mr. Rose was nice enough to give us his signature, the intern was also nice enough to tell us his birthdate too... :)
Friend of mine also ran into him the other day, reportedly he was wearing a Defcon sweatshirt.... hmm maybe he'll make a DC12 apperance??

I agree; They are ok for comic relief but there are much better sources of information out there.

Now, to really destroy a drive, maybe a few shaped charges set around the drive would work. I'd hate to bump the *unprotected momentary switch* on the side of the computer though. :)
naw i would just go with a tape eraser, a flip of the switch and bam all the info is gone

Very true, I do believe that 7+ = military strength, and there are a few packages out there that do it, or more quite easily. System Mechanic is capable of 9, maybe 12+ passes, after overwriting with garbage data numerous times, truncating size to 0, and then overwriting several more. That is not to say that it is flawless, or data cannot still be found..but they will have a hell of a challenge on their hands should they choose to do so.

                          Yeah I second that..
More than 7 wipes and your past the DoD and government standards... (but how high are those on anything..?)
The *nix cmd: shred does a default of 25 I think, there's also a lot of Zero fillers and other utils for secure file deletion and HD formatting.
But true.. the NSA does have some crazy microscopes i hear.

Acid and some serious, serious fire... then bottem of a great lake, or maybe the pacific ocean, or a volcano... They won't be getting and of my data... muuh hahahah ...

On a side note I was in fry's and I saw a "cd destroyer" they had a sample of what it produced, I thought it would shred the cd into confetti but instead it just simply did a checker pattern on both sides of the disk more or less thermal style. Would this still pass DoD specs I was kind of in a hurry at frys in buying a desk and chair for my daughter so I did not get to read the info on the box but hell if the DoD have these electro microscopes that read hard disk would a cd or dvd back up be such a concern even passed through such a device? I do realize that a simple campfire or even a bic lighter would render such media null and at a significantly lower price, anyone have any thoughts or experience with this type of device?

I have actually seen the device at one of my sites I visit in Lake Forest, CA and they report that its nothing but problems. It takes forever to run and gets stuck ejecting the disc (if this is the one I am thinking of). Better off just breaking the disc or burning it as you state.

Yea, I believe the device was about $40. It seems as if it would be more of a novilty item than something productive.
