  • Pop music ripoffs

In this day and age where an artist or band's success depends more on image than musical talent, and a song's success is largely a measure of marketing, it's no surprise to see bands ripping off music from a less creatively bankrupt era.

The foremost of these has to be Jet / Are You Gonna Be My Girl, which blatently rips off not only the rhythm, but also the chord structure of Iggy Pop / Lust for Life. Fortunately, it seems there are many clueful enough to recognize this, most likely because Are You Gonna Be My Girl was recently featured on both iPod ads and ads for the movie "The Big Bounce" (which, ironically, is the latest in a long string of remakes, thanks creatively bankrupt Hollywood!) while Lust for Life is being used to advertize a cruise line.

There's also Fuel / Falls on Me, whose chorus bears an uncanny resemblance to Collective Soul / Heavy. In addition to subtle similaries in the music (despite the markedly different styles of Collective Soul and Fuel), compare the lyrics of the refrain of each song:

Collective Soul: "And all your weight, it falls on me, it brings me down. And all your weight, it falls on me, it falls on me."

Fuel: "And all of your ways, all you dream, falls on me. It falls on me."

There's also the Flaming Lips / Fight Test, which has many strange resemblances to Cat Stevens / Father and Son, not only in chord structure but also in the vocals. This resemblance is quite a bit more subtle than the other two, and consequently I wouldn't say it reflects negatively on the Flaming Lips... Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is, in my opinion, one of the best albums in recent history.

Well Survivor was the firat reality TV show to do well, and others followed suit, very closely. Music is the same, the genre of the 80s proves it. I thini only four proplr ever wrote 80's music, it all sounds the same. To say it is a rip off may be extreme, it's more like flattery by following their leads.

Are you kidding? I was raised on 80s music and wish I had every single song that came out!

80's music is the shit. Sure, a lot of it sounded the same, but everything sounds the same to a person that doesn't like the particular genre. I just wish I was born sooner.

Yes, you speak wisely. Not sure how I forgot Slayer on that list. South of Heaven is one of the best albums of all time...with quite possibly the greatest line ever in Silent Scream:

                    Embryonic death,
                    Embedded in your brain.
                    Suffocation, strangulation,
                    Death is fucking you insane.

And another of my all time favorites in South of Heaven:

Bastard sons bagat your cunting daughters,
Promiscuous mothers with your incestuous fathers.
Ingrate souls condemned for all eternity,
Sustained by immoral observance a domineering deity

                    Damn Slayer kicks ass.

When I got off active duty I worked security for a rock group who had to give away tickets, it was so embarassing. A month after I quit they cut an album, then next thing you know, everyone heard of Huey Lewis and the News.

I also met Bananarama when seeing them costs a $3.00 cover charge at the local club :>

Yes, that they do. They'll also be on the Ozzfest 2004 tour with Judas Priest and others.
You're either on my side or else you're in the way.

I think Ozzfest stoped sucking after the 2001 tour.
