But Skroo, iming in the workplace really does come in handy. Especially when no one gets an office these days and conference rooms are always booked. Also comes in handy to see who's actually working at their computer when telecommuting and who the slackers are! :D

Actually, that was the environment that made me hate it. Unlike email, all thought came in 10-second bursts - ideas never really got finished and nobody really knew what they had just talked about. Not to mention that it's intrusive (I really do not want it popping up while I'm in the middle of manually correlating syslogs from multiple routers) and, as you say, a giveaway as to whether or not you're at your desk. I've also got some security concerns about both the software itself and the information that gets traded over it.

Waaaay back around 1989 I used a chat program (DOS of course) which evaluated your educational level based on what you typed. It actually challenged you to think before you type so that you can try to appear to be at least as smart as the last grade you properly completed.

It made you stop and think as you typed. Sure a step up from AIM.

does any one else find the irony of having a meeting to discuss how IM should replace meetings....

Well most IM is horribly insecure. I know for a fact the AIM sends all of its messages clear text. I would assume the same goes for Yahoo! Messenger, Microsoft Messenger, and ICQ.

MOST=ALL unless supported and running encryption....digest (email) reading can be entertaining however.*

No, I wish I did. I even had the 5 1/4" floppy until about 2 years ago. I remember that just getting to the 10th grade level was tough for anyone. I once typed in a paragraph from the Wall Street Journal and it was 8th grade!
