  • Open source sucks!

Wow, if that isn't a troll of a title. It's not so much that open source sucks as much as there are areas where it is thoroughly decimated by awesome proprietary programs.

I needed to make some diagrams for my web site and decided to start with xfig and gplot. Deciding those both sucked, I turned to Gnome standbys SodiPodi and dia. Neither of these seemed to fit the bill, so I decided to download the OmniGroup's diagramming program, OmniGraffle.

And wow, talk about night and day. OmniGraffle makes the process of making beautiful looking diagrams easy as cake, and is wonderfully intuitive. After spending about an hour of frustration messing with open source, all it took was a little proprietary crippleware to get the job done. And the saddest part is the most featureful open source program for this task, dia, seems to have evovled very little in the past two years.

In conclusion, beggars can be choosers. I'll take proprietary crippleware over free software any day when the proprietary crippleware rules this much...

As much as a I hate to say it... Exchange. It's a really useful set of tools with idiotic hardware requirements and a tendency to die at all the wrong times. Why is there no similar *nix product?

The Sun Java System Messaging Server and the Sun Java System Calendar Server provide Exchange-like functionality for Outlook and Evolution clients.

Of course, they certainly aren't open source...

Well Bascule, it looks like you found a new project! To Sourceforge you go!

Well, there's already http://www.opengroupware.org/, although unlike the Sun Java System Message Server it isn't Exchange compatible...
