  • Question: Linux-->Windows Administration

    Well. administration with using Windows-->Linux is easy with such tools as putty and ssh with rsa keys. but i was wondering. does windows have any type of integrated remote logging system or some type of way of connecting to your windows server without having to load any type of special software onto the server. I have looked at several nice programs that can be used but im looking for something down to the base with a fresh install i could use incase the tools arent there.

    To clarify_ im trying to remote log into windows using a linux box. i know im kinda going assbackwards here. hehe. but its not my decision who runs what on their server.

    Anyways. Whatevers useful. if there is not a way. post maybe a link to a compact tool that can be transported via a floppy disk.

    i hope this is clear

      First one's free: rdesktop .

      And as highwiz said, ask Google. We'll answer questions, but this isn't your personal technical support forum.

        rdesktop is the #1 reason I didn't have to get off my ass for a year of win administration at my last employer.. and as they say in rome; when in rdp..
        if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

          OK, but I gotta get it back to the shop by six or they'll hit me with an extra day's rental.

          I love it because it totally negated my past employer's argument about Windows servers being unmanageable from *nix. That and Cygwin/X have saved my ass from many pointelss trudges to click three buttons in order to fix the problem at hand.

          What's scary, though, is when you see production Windows servers running PC Anywhere explicitly for remote admin purposes. I can't believe that with nearly eight years of the NT platform supporting Terminal Services there are still idiots out there who don't know about it.

            You got off my point. i have done the ground work. VNC looks nice. but its always good to have a 2nd opinion. But i was looking for something integrated. so that way i can use a fresh install without having to load tools. a JIC scenario.

            but thanks for the information.

              Uh, no. Your original question was, "does windows have any type of integrated remote logging system or some type of way of connecting to your windows server without having to load any type of special software onto the server."

              Read on.

              But i was looking for something integrated.
              That would be Terminal Services, which has shipped as standard with every NT-based Windows OS since Windows NT Terminal Server edition; it's just an install-time checkbox. It doesn't get much more integrated than that, and, unlike VNC, runs over an encrypted session.
