I live in Denver now with an average of 12 cars stolen daily. I want to set up some kind of DIY security and curious what others have done.

two ideas:

1. put a hidden switch on the fuel pump line.

2. put a hidden switch on the starter.

If you look at the crime stats for Denver most of the stolen vehicles had the keys in the ignition and were running (Crime Stats from the Denver PD for Jan-March 2004)

I want to set up some kind of DIY security and curious what others have done

2. put a hidden switch on the starter.

I would go with the hidden switch on the starter, but thats just me.


Also, these were the top stolen vehicles in the Denver Area for Jan-Dec 2003 and they still made the list for Jan-March 2004.

5. Chrysler Neon
5. Toyota Pickups

kill switches work great, as well as the club for the visual effect, best bet is lowjack.
but it comes down to this, if they want your car bad enough, they will just take it from you when you are driving.

I had an Oldsmobile that had the best security feature ever. ON the rear of the trunk it said OLDSMOBILE. :D

Does anyone remember that SNL skit from a long time ago that showed the Chameleon XKJ? The exterior was all rusted, and it had a parking boot on one wheel, but on the inside it was all nice with leather and like a cd player(remember, this was a long time ago). Phil Hartman hosted the skit......good times

A buddy of mine has a really nicely restored '69 GMC half ton that he mounted a kill switch on the ignition lines. The switch is a pressure foot switch (click on, click off) under the carpet up in the corner by the shifter. You'd never find it if you did'nt know where to look.

Just make sure that anything you do will be safe (correct wire for application, etc), and that it will be reliable. Don't need it failing on you at the wrong time.

That def. doesnt beat rigging a flame thrower to your door for security.

6 deep cell marine batteries running in parallel, effectively electrifying the car with at least 1 collapsable circuit and 3 1 farad caps to take any abuse they may try to give it by hitting it with a shock stick or stun gun. It'd definately leave a mark, and they'd think twice about doing it again. Couple that with a remote transmitter similiar to those used to unlock doors in a frequency range commonly used by many other things(radio control cars/the like) and make sure you can give it a security code. Overblown or complicated? quite possible, will your car disappear? Only if they survive long enough to maintain contact with it for extended periods of time.

But I don't think I need one of my close friends thinking like you, they would probably throw me the keys just to watch me fly or fry :P which ever way, just for the laugh...

I put a fuel pump kill switch in mine. I chose the fuel pump because then the thief is more likely to spend some time trying to get it to turn over, rather than immedietly know it's dead. The switch is just a toggle ran back to the center console. Just make sure to use it *every time* because the one time you forget will be the time someone jacks your server.

The coolest system I'd want would be a GPS hooked up to a voice box, tied to a cell phone. So you could just call your car and it would tell you where it's at. Unfortunately, there's no cell phone's that don't have monthly fees attached to them :(
