  • Sharp Zaurus & iptables

Does anyone with the Zaurus 5500 (and/or more recent incarnations) have iptables running? I'll be going to 5th Hope and hopefully to Defcon and wouldn't want to see my favorite pda owned. Some ports, I've heard, are only accessible via the i/o port and not eth0.

    Any insights?

I have a Zaurus 5500, I have not messed much with iptables yet, what ROM are you running?
OpenZaurus 3.2 isn't very stable for my (i symlink installed apps to my 128 PNY SD card so that could be part of it). OZ 3.3.5 or whatnot is stable BUT quite a few of the apps don't work.
The sharp ROM is stable for me, but won't remound my SD card after suspend, and i dunno.. its limited...
Good luck, have you checked out the Zaurus User Group and such?

I have the most recent Kompany rom that I flashed it with several months ago and I like it. I agree on the OZ stability, although they are on the right track with it, especially with the battery meter that actually gives a percentage. As for the ZUG, I've checked around a few boards, but didn't find anything useful. I don't think most people would sweat having a firewall on an embedded device, but I just like to have my bases covered :D.

Are you running the most current Sharp ROM?

Right now my Zaurus has just been sitting around waiting to be reflashed with something good...

The Kompany rom is a bit stripped down, but is functional. IIRC, zaurususergroup.com has the Hancom suite and other packages in their download section. Last time I checked, Sharp was re-doing their site and didn't have these available.

I just put the Kompany rom on my Zaurus and got it running again..No complaints, but it will turn off my CF wireless card after not finding any networks.. its really annoying because kismet will stop working after a matter of minutes :(
But overall it seems better than OZ, although the pkg manager isn't up to speed...

Do you have your network settings for fixed ip or DHCP? I have mine on DHCP and when I use Kismet, I initialize the network app and then put on Kismet. As long as Kismet is scanning, the connection will stay active.

I'm sure theres a way to sidestep the network applet and keep the card on all the time, but I"m not sure what that would do to the battery :D

In anticipation of some heavy use and traveling this summer, I bought a battery extender. How does your battery do?

I have two different settings , one DHCP, one static IP... both after not finding an AP will shut off my CF card. I've tried bringing it back with ifconfig eth0 up... but it gives me a strange error, and 'no device is present'.
I think im going to try OZ 3.2 again because i didn't have the problems with my network card when running, and the battery mon. works..
My battery doesn't do that long, when i get OZ back on there, i'll get some avg times and post em here....
