  • XP Network Timeout Settings

I've got XP Pro at work, and it's constantly giving me network timeout errors, despite being hooked up to a T1. Now, with 95/98, I would just adjust my timeout settings, give it a little bit of leeway for those ping replies, but I absolutely cannot find where in holy hell they put that setting.

I've climbed all around my network settings, done a little registry hunting, googled the hell out it, and even resorted to asking a few people (god forbid)... no luck.

Of course this may not even be my problem.

If someone can point me in the right direction, I'll buy 'em a six-pack at the con.

try using the tools at www.dslreports.com aka www.broadbandreports.com. The tool section is located on the left of the main page. They have a tweak section(that will test your connection and tell you about it in detail) and a program called dr.tcp that (i think) can modify your TTL and many other settings that affect performance. Its worth a try, but it might not be your problem.

Just took a bit of Googling and the Microsoft website. Hopefully this answers your question as to how to increase your timeout setting: http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

Scroll down to the bottom, its registry stuff, so back it up.

Thanks, Highwizard -- I had actually seen that post in the microsoft site before, but blew it off due to "Network Connection Sharing" being part of the title ("I'm not using NCS, that must not apply to me!" <bows head in shame>)

Packeteater -- great site, but their info seemed to stop at Win2K... that and they wanted $$.

If either of y'all track me down, I'll buy you a few beers.

strange, i believe it should be free to run most of the tests on that site, make sure its the tweak test your running. They also do give a winXP option

You're right, most of the tests are free and I did run the tweak test. It pointed me towards adjusting my RWIN setting, for which their article didn't have an XP example (for some reason M$ chooses to change the name of registry keys in every new iteration).

It did point me in the right direction, though, so thanks (and thus beer) go your way as well.
