  • E3

I figure people around here have at least something to say about E3. My main interests this year were Sony and Nintendo's new handhelds.

    Here's Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP):

    And here's Nintendo DualScreen (DS):

Both sport BlueTooth. The PSP supports USB 2.0 and is rumored to support DVD-RW like media which can be used to store movies and songs in a variety of formats, including the MiniDisc ATRAC3 format, as well as MP3, and also sports MemoryStick support. All of these features are designed to integrate with Sony's recently launched Sony Connect music store, which rivals Apple's iTunes Music Store.

I like the two-screen approach but they missed the boat. They need to add some i-glasses, bifocal style, so you need to look close in AND at the game unit at the same time. That will really add depth, literally!

The PSP looks very promising. The kind-of-DVD-RW that it may take makes me wonder if people will end up being able to use mini-cds. That would be handy to watch movies with.
I don't quite understand the purpose of dual screens on Nintendo's handheld. It would be useful to display maps and things, but I don't see that as something worthy of the extra cost of a whole different screen.
Nintendo has an iron grip on the handheld market, it'll be nice to see them get some competition.
      The dude abides.

I was kinda hoping Nintendo would resurrect the Virtual Boy. Alas, it was not to be. The PSP does look kinda nifty, though.

I just looked at Space Squash with my 3D glasses and now I want to play it. I guess I will just play Tetris drunk again

I remember playing one of those at a Blockbuster and thinking how cool it was. Although, the whole causing vision loss thing did kind of ruin the mood.

Virtual Boy got you high for a few minutes after you stopped playing it... granted it's nothing like true ganja, but it was definitely a mild thrill for a middle schooler

How come we here in the USA don't have as many fun things as the Japanese?

I've been keeping my eye on the new Metroid and Zelda games that were revealed.
