FTP problem

ok well i do know you are not supposed to ask "how do you hack" and so on well i have a problem and im just wondering if you guys know how do get around it. you see me and my friends ftp changed domains so he says, so he asked me to try and find the password. the password has been changed and i dont know if the username has too, he aquired this FTP through a friend and so he does not have to pay any money, and he no longer talks to this friend, because he has moved..so i tried to get into the ftp using DOS by pressing enter when it asked me for a user name and password and then entering these commands..
"quote user ftp"
"quote cwd ~root"
"quote pass ftp"
these failed maybe because shadowing is turned off im not sure, but if you could help i would appreciate it, if you don't want to help/can't help don't worry about it i understand.

I guess the point is still completely missed. It's not that problems aren't solvable here, it's not the place to solve your particular problem which is dubious in intent.
