  • A Hitch Hickers Guide To DefCon

Just thought that was a pretty clever title for this tread. Anywayz...

I was wondering if you guys and girls think it would be practical to hitch hike to Vegas from Toronto.

I never been to Defcon yet and I really want to go this year. I have very little money to use to get down there though. I just want to know your opinion on wheither I should backpack it or wait till next year.

This is a scary prospect, and is illegal in many places. There are all kinds of crazies out there who claim to know how to drive and have hidden agendas when picking up hitchhikers. Though there is some risk to being a passenger with strangers going to DC, hooking up with a group that plans to drive from Toronto to DC might be a safer bet. I know we have some Canadians on this forum, and some may have some kind of swap they would be willing to make with you for transit.

It would be safer to wait until you can afford the con. Consider about $7 to $30 per day for food, slavery(trade) to $145 per night for a hotel, and $80 for the con, and you may find that chipping in 1/3 the cost of gas may be a small price to pay if you can find 2 other people for the trip. (Not only that, but you have a better chance the people actually know something that you may want to talk to them about.)

At this point, getting a room near the AP with little money would be more of a difficulty than getting a ride. (Guessing.)

    Good luck

it's likely only illegal within the city limits of major metro areas.

let's get 1 thing straight though: in my opinion, you're more likely to be harmed hitchhiking in canada than you are in the US. the US has a complex road system where if something goes wrong, you can take comfort in knowing that 6 trillion other people are using the roads as well. in canada, you're likely on highway 1, [also known as canada's only road; it's paved and up to code!] and if you get held against your will or even run over, you're sort of sol for finding help.

it's a stupid fucking idea in my opinion. find the nearest rail yard/switchyard and jump on some cargo containers. there are a few websites for that i believe. it's not practical. reno to lv is practical [notwithstanding weather] even lax to las is practical. but toronto? give yourself a few weeks and pray you won't be burdening others in society when you get harmed.

If it is Canada "only road", wouldn't the density of travelers be *greater* than the US which has a "complex road system" (which would mean fewer travelers per road average).

Yeah, this is a bad idea. Wait a year, save up your money, and travel safely.

highway 1 is the only trans-provincial road in canada. i think the widest it gets is 3 lanes 1 way. the population of canada is 31 million. the population of the united states is 293 million.

find a way to philly or chicago and fly southwest to vegas. southwest is hella fucking cheap by canadian standards. or, book a year in advance and fly america west's or air canada's nonstop flights to vegas.

This is crazyness... If you arrive in 1 part to defcon, you'll probably be so tired and will sleep all the weekend!
+ The easiest thing is to go from Toronto to Vegas, cause you got some motivation, but dam the ride back to Toronto will be twice as painfull...
+ Not sure how easy it is for a Hitch Hicker at the Customs...

If I'd ever go to Vegas in car, it would probably be for the pleasure of the ride... So unless your a expert Hitch Hickers and know what your doing, stay away....
