  • Apple's new shizznit

At the WWDC keynote today, Steve Jobs announced a new line of stylishly designed Cinema displays, sporting DVI rather than Apple's proprietary ADC, which as much as people rib on apple for was actually a great idea. However, given the slick new looks, I'm certainly not disappointed:

Also released were screenshots of the upcoming MacOS X 10.4 "Tiger":

Included will be a new display system (CoreVideo) capible of rendering vector drawing instructions (a.k.a. Display PDF) directly to OpenGL meshes prior to compositing, allowing the full power of the GPU to be leveraged and freeing the host CPU for more important things.

The new iChat AV looks absolutely wonderful, especially with up to 4 way video conferencing. Check out the reflections under the video streams... I think I'm getting an eyecandy sugar rush...

Nor am I; those look sweet.

I'm wondering if this trend for ever-larger (30". Holy Shit.) digital monitors isn't going to force HDTV manufacturers to start including DVI on their consumer-market products. WindowMaker on something like this only with better resolution would make me very, very happy.

Most of them do already, actually...

Ooh... Got any specifics or recommendations? I haven't been actively looking for a new TV, but that might help spur me on.

          RCA has the following:

          40" Diagonal HDTV Monitor
          Progressive Scan functionality.
IntelliFocus™ Digital Auto Convergence and a 3D Y/C Digital Frame Comb Filter DVI Input with HDCP.

*There's some other features, but I can't think of what they are without going over to my grandparents house to take a look*

Also, MacOS X Tiger, 64-bit at last:

I have a dream where everyone at my workplace has a G5 as opposed to both a Sun workstation (Blade 1000/2000) and a PC and instead has one computer which runs both their scientific computing/X11 applications and Microsoft Word/PowerPoint/etc.

After installing 10.3 on a G3 iBook I noticed a decent speed increase. Do you think that this OS could start bogging down some of the older machines?

If Apple can make it operate just as fast as its predecessor on older Macs Steve Jobs is the man.
