MMOG in Courts soon?

Originally posted by highwizardIt kinda reads like a Penny-Arcade strip.
Yes, it does. Even more so if you read the disclaimer."It is difficult not to wonder whether that combination of elements which produces a machine for labor does not create also a soul of sorts, a dull resentful metallic will, which can rebel at times". Pearl S. Buck

This is nothing new. The man they mention in Milwaukie, his mother tried suing SOE or Verant (sorry I cant remember which) for his suicide. I believe the case fell through due to lack of evidence why he killed him self. I dont believe he left any sort of suicide note at all. His mother tried to say that he lost some items in the game and decided to kill him self. The mother that left her daughter in her car and she then died, thats not a games fault thats poor parenting skills. A woman like that should not be allowed to have children. My opinion on it is that if someone is unstable enough to kill themselves or leave their child in a car over a video game they probably have problems stemming else where i.e. homelife, parents, bad childhood, etc... MMORPG's are just another scapegoat for these people who cant face the fact that they have a problem that they created. When people are addicted to substances and such we don't often take pity on the person and blame it on the substance but tell the person to go get help. Yes I do agree that MMORPG's are very addictive but just like any addiction you need to go get help on your own because the user is the one who picked up the game and started playing it.The penguin is watching.

A partial list of things that have been blamed for killings and/or suicides:
- Dungeons & Dragons
- Heavy metal music
- Violence on TV
- Violence in video games
I'm sure books have been blamed, too. So it's not all that surprising to see MMO's added to the list.
It's kind of predictably sad. When a loved one kills himself or another, the urge has to be strong to look for an outside influence to blame. Call it an extended anger phase of the grieving process.
Of course, taking the anger phase into the court system is still batshit loony.

Having been a teenager at one time and an avid MMORPG player (since reformed) I don't even have to read the article before saying that it's full of shit. The kid who killed himself with "THAT DAMN GAME" on his monitor was categorically depressed. There was an obvious downhill slide that his fat fuck of a mother didn't recognize. Rather than blame her son, the environment he grew up in, their inability to recognize the failures she's pinning everything on Everquest.
If only Frank Zappa was alive and an MMORPG player. We own everything so you don't have to!
