  • External Sound Card Advice

I am wanting to get a new sound card to record some tracks for my friend's band. Considering how sporadically we get together, it needs to be portable. I am looking at the M-Audio MobilePre. It fits what I'm looking for quite well. I mainly need at least two instrument inputs and a stereo mike input.

Figure I'd run it by you guys to see if you have any other suggestions, or expierience with this sound card.

Pre-Amping Instruments and Microphones Off USB Power is one of the most
interesting approaches to home recording I've seen in a device. It seems
ok if you're just laying down a vocal or guitar track here and there, would be
cooler if it didnt do just 2 channels. The headphone out on the device itself
is a bonus though for smaller more compact locations, It seems ok, I'd see
if they'll let you demo it out a bit before you buy, check sound quality and recording, power consumption for your Laptop or ibook, Im recording new
tracks all the time, if I had a job where I had to be mobile all the time, it'd be
    a fun tool to have.

Yeah, Luckily a Micro Center and my local instrument store both stock this thing. Between the two of them, somebody will let me plug it into my laptop for a few minutes. :)

You might take a look at something like this:

Or if you need a step up from that, you could get yourself some entry level DigiDesign hardware:
