757 @ DC13.... possible contributions?

All I know is that there was a woman behind the front desk when I checked out who was (imnsho) rude to the attendee in front of me. He asked why he had to pay full price (129+) for a Sunday night in Las Vegas, especially when Defcon "comes to the AP every year and we spend so much money". The woman handed him his receipt and curtly replied that Defcon wouldn't be there next year and walked away.

It doesn't matter if she's new at the hotel and has no idea how much cash we represent to that place. It's a *lot* of money for a hotel in Vegas that doesn't have a casino. Is there ever another time of year when they sell out *every* room in the hotel for 3-4 days straight? I doubt it.

Apparently, she felt she had some authority over the hotels contractural agreements but whether she did or didn't, she was rude. I should have called and complained.

Why the change of heart?

I'm not trying to stir the shit here, but whats behind the change from post dc11 where you were bitching about various topics to this year wanting to help out at dc13?

I find this change interesting and would like to understand what caused it.

As per your ideas, I am one of the guys that runs the defcon movie channel. If you have been following the other thread started by kampf you will see that we are going to have more time devoted to "filler" next year. If your plan for another TV chan doesn't work out, or even if it does, we would love to get a copy of the material you have that would fit well between the movies, just about anything up to 30 min in length.

Please send myself or Kampf a PM if you are willing to share your material.

Ah mostly access to the closed circuit televisions. I feel bad for anyone that doesn't have such a thing. I wasn't planning to go to defcon this year, but friends from the west coast and other locals (who's employer sent them) went, and they convinced me to go.

I didnt' stay at AP, as I didn't book any rooms, as I wasn't planning to go. But one of the locals booked early enough in advance to score a room at AP, and it was quiet and he hooked us up with a key. We dropped our stack of MPEG2 encoders at his room and were off.

So far I've only seen 3 of the actual speaches, but it's the principal :-) I was pretty turned off at DC11 when people were lining up hours in advanced to see something, and still getting turned away. Once again, the principal :-)

I only made it to 2 actual speaches at hope, and saw 1 in the conf room at Defcon.

We did quite a bit of work for the Hope conference, and it turned out pretty well. Since we are east coast, it is easier transporting shit to that conf.

I have quite a bit of stuff. Don't know if you noticed this or not, but Archive.org has full MPEG2 (nice quality) copies of some early AT&T/Bell stuff. Also the Computer Chronicals copies they have, a few of those are pretty good. Especially the earlier ones that have the early days of SunOS (Sun 3/60 style workstations)... alot of early Unix stuf. The SIGGRAPH stuff is quality, but licensed and generally more of a technical advertisement for the associated firm.

I'm still sorting out all of the files from Hope, and waiting for some disks to arrive from California with the stuff that was dumped during this years con. After I get done with all of that, I will come up with a list of everything I have and email it to you. I could use a good copy of the Summercon 95 video (the one with RF Burns and them using a Maxtrac @ Summercon 95, I can't believe they beat us to that).
Also there is this rare documentary called "Ma Bells Delinquent Children." If anyone happens to have those in a good format, please drop me a line (MPEG2 @ 4mbps 720x480, or maybe even VideoCD quality, or VHS).

Depending on where Defcon is at, I wonder if access to the CATV headend at the hotel will go away. None of the big places are going to let them touch the plant.

And I thoughtone of the reasons AP was picked is because it had no Casino? Something about people under 21 not being able to reserve a room at Casino equipped hotels. No idea, not familiar with vegas laws and not under 21.

Did you know that many of the hotels on the Vegas strip appear to have their own CALEA nodes? Pretty fucking wild. It's documented out on the net in random talk about interfacing the CALEA units to hotel PBXs.

Want Alexis Park next year (if possible)

I for one hope DC13 is held at Alexis Park. I have never stayed there since the TV channels started to include talks. How cool.

Unfortunately, (from what I've read in the local Vegas papers) Alexis Park will soon have at least limited gaming, which will keep those under 21 from renting rooms. Maybe that's good--I don't know? I talked to several people working at the Alexis Part (who claimed to be long-time employees) and they know next to nothing about the sale. They feel that nothing will change.

That's too bad because what I've heard (and other reasech backs this up) the Alexis Park and surrounding properies will become an upscale Asian-themed hotel casino resort. The new buyers (who incidently also tried but failed to buy the Aladdin) are interested in the land and its proximity to the Hard Rock.

Those under 21 cannot rent rooms but they can STAY IN the rooms, and cannot be on the gaming floor unless just passing through. But can anyone imagine Defcon taking up, say, a wing of the Flamingo, and then all the pool activity going on among regular tourist type folks? I don't think so.

I only know the AP for Defcon. There have been other hotels before the AP. The powers in charge need to dig out their old methods of madness and keep everything rolling along.

I guess this means the AP gets blown up?

My main reason for asking about hotel switch was because I know the layout of things and that the laser stuff would work fairly well. But as per Goon Chris there is no fucking way in hell we would ever be allowed to contribute to Defcon, so I scrapped the idea and will focus energies on a million other projects

Defcon totally takes over the AP, which is pretty nice. If it moves to a hotel/casino of gigantic size, then the attendees will have very little impact on the hotel. The hotel won't let them change the channel lineup on the television, and security will probably be a bit more anal. I'm sure there are plenty of other places like AP in Vegas... But the comment about there being enough seating for everyone sounded like something was in mind.

I can understand the property value of AP rising, the Hard Rock is one of the hot spots in Vegas and investors are looking to cash in on it's popularity.

My memory may be failing me, but I remember at closing ceremonies Dark Tangent announced Defcon 13 would be held at the Alexis Park.

Then again, I was incredibly tired by that time, so I may have misheard.
