A few questions,
Rumors were amiss about a hotel change for the next defcon due to contracts ending, and hotel buyouts. Does anyone have official information on this? Other rumors were that the AP would get redone and a casino is being built next door, but Defcon would return. One of the goons made a comment about "next time, there will be more seats than people." ... That is the only hints I saw.
There is logic behind the question. Quite a few locals showed up at DefCon, and quite a bit of chatter is running amiss among the local hackers, phreakers and geeks. People are talking of entering several contests if they run next year, and there is a good chance I'd be willing to contribute some newness assuming permission and facilities facilitate my junk.
A few ideas for DC13 that I can assist with... pending approval:
#1, a 757 movie channel. I assisted with the 5th Hope conference this year running a fairly large video network and have amassed quite a collection of HPAV and computer/classic computer related content. We could handle running a movie channel indepedant of the "movie channel" that already runs. More variety, no competition to the official movie channel. I can provide the equipment, mainly a Linux PC And a Behringher Ultra-Mizer Pro for audio normalization. Possibly even an agile video modulator if needed, although I'm guessing they are just unplugging the sat receivers from the in-place agile modulators at the Hotel's CATV plant.
#2, maybe extend our movie channel into outdoor poolside screenings? Maybe we could take over pool #2 at night and use 2 projectors to rear project content on well visible screens. Oh, and in the breaks of the videos would come
#3, some sorta multimedia presentation... keeping on topic with industrial music, telco and hack/phreak related video and huge fucking lasers. Well, I only have one big laser but it is indeed 5 watts. The water from the pool can keep it cool, and 3 phase 220vac @ 60 amps should be no biggie from the genset that runs the air handlers, assuming home slice can get me a tap from the distro past the step down (not unless those air handlers are 480 and thats a buck-boost transformer I saw in the distance). Anywho, hopefully by DC13 I will have the ability to do full graphics, and a CDRH certification from the US Govt allowing me to run my goods in public. A friend might be able to whip up code to drive the bILDA project to sniff network traffic and display it projected in laser against a flat surface somewhere in the courtyard, who knows. I've also got 4 intellabeam fixtures (older 400s) and a 750 watt strobe. Don't want to go the trancy dancy club route though. Also getting it up in the air could be fun but I guess that is why they make electric scissor lifts.
There are some other projects that I won't mention, but those are my potential contributions off the top of my head. A huge issue is getting the shit to vegas. We are in Southeastern Virginia and its a 3 day drive to Vegas... a truck would almost be needed for the gear.
I think there was other stuff, but I forgot.
Honestly, I was dead fucking tired after The Fifth Hope conference, and wasn't looking forward to Defcon as I was still recovering from all the work put into the video stuff from Hope. I had much fun at defcon AND hope, enjoyed both very much. Kudos.
