I believe the way this stuff usually works is through blogs. The "blog community" decides that they want to link a particular word to a web site, so many people link to a site using that word. Due to Google's more-links-increases-ranking system, that site then becomes the number one site (i.e., the "I'm Feeling Lucky Site") for the chosen phrase.

Since this kind of stunt requires many, many people, tricks like this aren't really a secret.

Google's algorithm is becoming ever more powerful, almost psychic. :]
The 'Company' section notes SCO has 'a worldwide presence.' Hhmm, wonder why; and whether the world views them amicably is another story. But wait! You can link to their own 'Code of Conduct and Ethics' PDF, which substantiates how principled they are. Gosh, maybe we got them all wrong.

You would be suprised at the systems currently installed or still being installed with SCO Unix. They do have a large presents in the Restruant insdustry, as well as the Auto Parts industry. Micros POS systems still use SCO, as well as CSK auto (Checker, Shucks, Kragen). But it looks like that is rapidly changing with Micros using M$ for new versions of it's POS and auto parts stores like Auto Zone switching to Linux.

Great article murakami.

It got me thinking on defusing google bombs. After a few seconds of thought, I can only defuse the "I'm feeling lucky" part of it.

You'd need to get another extensive site (check out how the Church of Scientology did it i n the article), and whenever a google bomb starts that you disagree with (say you were pro-bush or something), then you could google bomb the original #1 link (which would probably be in the second place right now).

Oh, and my other idea is.. google could make their algorithm better ;)
