  • extreme slow transmissions!!

Hi guys im new and hope that this board will help me solve problems and let me help solve ohter probs ;) .

Well at the moment i am really just hoping for somebody to help with mine.
i Have a netgear router the wgt624 and i have extreme problems with it and i would be so thankfull for hints how to solve them.

my biggest prob is that whenever i try to send large data over the wireless network the speed slows down to about 1 mbit/s wich really makes it impossibly to send videos or so. maybe somebody knows how to solve this or knows that one cant solve it!!

as a hint, my estimation is that this problem is occuring because of the wlan-router only having one antenna and not beeing able to send and receive at the same time, just because if i ook up one computer by cable the speed is totally fine.
does anybody know if this is "repairable" with software or that this really is a hardware thing.

and id be thankfull for any reviews on netgear itsself and its routers just to see if i wanna stay with em.

thanks for u guyses help in advance hope u can solve this with me.

by the way sorry for my bad grammar i'm european. ;)

I wonder if you are getting a good signal. I know when I get a "Low" signal at my campus the speed is about 1 mbit/s.

well usually my signal tends to change between 24 and 36 mbit/s except if i transfer a lot of data.
I've also tried setting the wlanrouter between two computers and both had perfect full signal und quality ... same prob !!

      // edit

maybe there is a posibility for the channel used influencing this whole system

This is fairly normal. Mine's at 54Mbit right now but can drop to as low as 11Mbit at times. If you're close to a microwave oven or 2.4GHz cordless phone this can also cause problems.

Yeah, change channels first just to eliminate that as a possibility. I kinda doubt that it will, but it doesn't hurt to check the basics.

Is it just the one client using the wireless? So is it just your laptop, or are other people using the wireless connection as well? This may have an affect.

By it's nature, 802.11 transmissions are half-duplex. Half-duplex means that it always transmits and receives separately, taking turns to perform each function.

Dual antennae are usually for diversity and have nothing to do with seperate transmission and reception. Only one AP that I know of separates the function, and then only when in one specific mode. Even then, it is still in half-duplex mode

Try to update the firmware. NetGear wireless stuff is known to be very bad, but an update might be available to fix it.

the Router has been updated prior to this post just to eliminate that posibility.

I'd be happy if it would only drop to 11 mbit but the speed is horrible it takes 200 min. to transfer 700 MB . there is also no microwave in the way of the wireless or near to a wireless user.

Is it just the one client using the wireless? So is it just your laptop, or are other people using the wireless connection as well? This may have an affect
well yes we have 5 people on wireless in total but also if only two are "online" the transmission is horrible. even setting the router right between two wireless users (5 feet away from each, signal was PERFEKT) did Not solve the prob.

                please people any ideas.

what do u guys think should i get myself an new router and if yes wich one ???

                thanks in advance

If you have firewall software that is built into the router or otherwise, you may want to check to see if your ports are being forwarded. I had a problem similar to this when using bittorrent and port forwarding helped a lot.

Not sure if this helps or not, so take it for what it's worth.

maybe i didnt express myself right this only happens inside the Lan and only with people using wireless.
otherwise, you may want to check to see if your ports are being forwarded. I had a problem similar to this when using bittorrent and port forwarding helped a lot.
I think this relates to the estimation that i have problems with the internet, that works totally fine, with 3 mbit no speed loss or anythin, aswell when transmitting "wlan -> Lan" or "Lan -> Lan" only when transmitting "Wlan -> Wlan" the speed goes down dramatically!!!
