  • Scanner over Network?

    Hi guys,

I have a basic all in one printer, a really cheap but very good value HP 1210.

I have it shared so that the others users on my small home netwrok can use it to print, the problem im facing is that only i can use the scanning facilities as its directly linked to my laptop.

Now to the point. Do you know of any software that allows me to utuilise the scanner over the network?

    Cheers in advance

How about the client Operating Systems in use? (I could assume Linux, but assumptions have got me into trouble before. :-)

If Linux, then you may want to check our SANE which is primarily for local, "fixed" scanners even though methods to support other scanners is described here with a list of supported/tested hardware for SANE. It appears there is another software package for SANE-aware/available scanners from a product called Image Scan!

    More content added:
    "remote-scan" for windows
Article on this for Mac OS X as a built-in to Panther.

      all running XP home,

i may put linux on a machine without the scanner attached, will this be okay or does the SANE program require that the host machine is running linux?

      cheers

Check out the link to the windows software listed above. Some scanner vendors provide support for network-based scanning of images in their products. (I found two companies that did this in my google searches.)

The image scanning server would need to run Linux if you wanted to use SANE and the "Image Scan!" application.

Though I am an avid fan of Linux, I will be the first to admit that support for Scanning in Linux is not as comprehensive as it is for Mac OS or Windows. In most cases, there are better drivers supporting more options in better applications with scanners made for Windows or Mac OS.
