PDA's Good or bad ?

I've recently brought a PDA Pocket PC, much to my friends disappointment, he thinks that i should of spent the money on something alse, admittedly i could of used the money to buy some part for my new custom PC which is still in the planning stages. however i found my PDA to be a very useful and i am glad that i got it. what do you think of pocket PC's ?

I got my PDA last Christmas and really haven't used it since. I'm a full-time student so my daily schedule isn't as hectic as, say, a businessman's. If you have a need for keeping organized, what better way than a PDA.

This is all aside from the "war-verbing" benefits.

I really enjoy my PDA, although I do not enjoy my Pocket PC. Your satisfaction will depend on what type of use you get out of it, and we can't dictate that. I mainly use it for data entry (e.g., recording expenses) and reading books. I could do the same things without the high cost of a computer, but I find the convenience exceeds the expense.

There are many people, however, that find a PDA simply does not fit their lifestyle. I usually recommend against their purchase since the latter group tends to be larger.



Now, for the things you did wrong:

• You have a politically-charged signature. That is a no-no around here.
• You post a question about Pocket PCs in the "Wireless Technology" forum. Unless their is an unstated connection (wardriving?), then you are off topic.
• Your post could use a read-through (or two) to improve the grammar.

PPCs: Where's the Killer Application?

I've found the Dell Axim X5 I've had for the last year-and-a-half to be invaluable.

It's been a real help with organizing my day (as you'd expect it to be), but since you've posted this in the Wireless section, I'll say the biggest bang for the buck I've gotten from it has been running Mini Stumbler on it and using it as a portable wardriving tool.

It's awesome for times you don't want to lug around a laptop. Armed with my trusty CF card, the PPC has decent range and pulls a solid amount of WAPs in a concentrated area. GPS functionality is a little quirky, but you can that working with a bit of tinkering.

The main problem that seems to plague the PocketPC is the lack of a "killer" application that's been developed specifically for it (IMHO). Most of the cutting edge stuff is still in open source and won't get ported to Pocket PC anytime in the near future. The rest of the applications available for it are so-so.

I really think people are trying to take advantage of the platform, but the size of the screen and the data entry interface still scare a lot of people off.

For platforms like the PPC it always seems to be a "chicken or egg" thing. Either the platform is hot and it lures soild development efforts to it, or the platform gets picked up by the masses because someone took the time and wrote an excellent application that made people gravitate to it. If neither of those things happen that platform tends to die a quick and painful death.

I think there's some real opportunity for PPCs, but it'll be interesting to see how things shake out for the platform as cell phones, PDAs, and laptops continue to converge in size and functionality.

In retrospect, that was really poor form on my part. I violated my own keep-private-messages-private rule, and that really pisses me off. That portion of my post wasn't meant as a flame; it started as a "you mean for wardriving?" question (due to the forum) and devolved. My only excuse is that it has been a really bad week for me.

I have an old-ass handspring visor... nothing fancy, no wireless, etc. I use it everyday. I can't justify the cost of something new and exciting.. this does what I want. Address book, gas mileage, calender, and games.

I have a little Clie' and it is great for address and phone numbers but having to learn a new way to write was a pain the neck
I am not sure that I would spend the money again though.
It does help a old lady keep up with things though.
