  • Womens's Meet?

I just wondered if there would be another female geek meet. If there is an idea to do this again, is it posible that it could be done earlier for the sake of making more females feel as if they are a part of defcon rather than worrying if they are simply viewed as scenewhores.

I think more females would feel attracted to computer events if they felt that they were taken seriously rather than being automatically viewed in a negative light.

    Just a thought for discussion.

    Blackorchid,

There will in fact be another meet. I am planning this as we speak. I have a few others who have asked about this, as well as new faces interested in helping to plan something a bit more solid.

For others that are interested you may send a private message to get on board the planning process.

No one here gives a rats ass if you have boobs unless that's the only thing you bring to the table. On the other hand, if you're incapable of distinguishing the difference between a conversational forum and SMS text messages, we're going to assume you're retarded. It's not a gender thing, it's an intelligence thing, period.

          OP,
Stop defending "us". She didn't say this happened HERE, it happened on OTHER forums.

With that said, let's keep this post what it is, a logistic and planning contact.

I'm not really defending us. I'm pointing out that what she sees as sexism is more likely an attack on her lack of basic communication skills. Why is it that if we smack down a guy for being stupid, that's ok, but if we do it to a girl, she runs off and cries about how we're so sexist? I'm sick of these girls' hypocritical whining.

I'm fine with the idea of a women's meet when it's about getting together and seeing "yeah, there are more out there like me!" The reason there has been a lack of support from the established women in this scene, though, is because it never turns out to be that. Someone has to start bitching about their perception of inequality because they can't handle being treated like the guys are and it starts everyone else on a rant.

I hope I didn't come across as whining also! Teehee

My point was more from the perspective of someone who does work, primarily in traditionally male oriented professions and seeing women do exactly what OP was complainng about. However, rather than trying to criticize women for being as such, it would seem to benefit to build and/or encourage women to be more substantial. (read into that what you will. :) )

Females, like myself, are apprehensive in attending a 'women meetings' because we are use to dealing with men and being treated with a certain respect that we have earned.

I must say that I can't think of a single female in that meeting that I would call weak or whiny and would like to see more encouragment for women who are like me, in their apprehension to be around women in general, attending the next meet.

I am sure I could have started the thread with more details of my thoughts but I tend to be verbose! (like this post!)

Last year the female geek meet thread was the busiest one on the board up to the con.

People (regardless of gender) might want to read that thread first so we don't have to go over the same ground again, and again, and again until someone (I'm not saying who) becomes a shrieking, homicidal estrogen propelled fireball hurtling through space time and wreaking wrath upon you all....

The female geek gathering announcement should be coming out *after* DT resolves the venue issue.

devilhunter: WTF do you mean "unworthy"? The only people I know who find female geeks unworthy are the scenewhores who don't get play from those of use who aren't bi when shitfaced drunk or otherwise.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Hey what gives you that feeling ? Don't even think about it. It is all in your brain. My experience is that you are met with the same respect as you are meeting others with. Make this a life rule no. 1. If you feel someone are treating you as shit, so do the same back and show them who are the strongest.

I have never seen that serious women have been hung out as scenewhores in Defcon. But if someone act as a scenewhore, of course she is treated like one.
It is the same with guys. Acting like retards they are viewed as retards.
And for God sake, computer addiction has nothing to do with men's opinion about you, and computer interest should not be motivated out from what the surroundings are thinking.
Does it really matter what they mean and say ?
But meetings are a cool idea, just remember - you are the one who decide how to be treated

We shall not provoke NDEX....this is not a good thing...:)

                      Read last years thread here

We are waiting until the venue is confirmed.
It really makes no sense to schedule at this point, however, we would like your suggestions on general logistics.

FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE SUGGESTIONS IN THIS THREAD!!!!

What about a meet-up that travels to Quarks, Shows, Dinner,<fill in the blank here>...

...I believe you are mistaken, I *think* what you meant to say was "Quarks, the only resturant which in accordance with federal law, NEVER served me underage for 3 years running." This IS a public forum.....:)

I LOVE this idea! I think it would avoid the propensity to become a bitch fest if we have more to do than sit around the table and introduce ourselves.
