Intel has defined a mesh networking standard for WiFi networks: 802.11s. All nodes on an 802.11s network can relay traffic for other nodes, meaning the more nodes there are on a particular network the physically larger the network can become, as only two points on the network need to be in range of each other to talk all the way across it. This is similar to what ham operators used to do with AX.25 networks, except 802.11s should be substantially easier to deploy and use. Here's hoping, personally I believe wireless mesh networking for the masses will be revolutionary.
