I can't tell you how many times Mplayer was the only player I could get running on certain distros....

That's too bad.

Between mplayer and xine, I could play almost everything. What is next? A similar page for xine?

Thanks for the news, Grifter.

well poop on a stick. it's times like these that remind me of EFF.
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Maybe they need an EFF across the pond, care to start one?
Did Everquest teach you that?

I liked its non gui lifestyle and wealth of codecs... bummer.. Good info though.

What makes mplayer diff that xine?

I re-read the page, and this is a warning and meant to generate political support in the EU to allow them to stick around before they start enforcing laws.

Closed for patent infringement

This headline might soon become a reality due to the numerous patented techniques MPlayer implements. Next up are the other free software multimedia players, like FFmpeg, xine, VLC, avifile, gstreamer.
First time I read it, it looked like they knew of a pending legal action. Now I read it and it looks more like, "We can see the writing on the walls, and our future is uncertain. Please help us with political support in the EU or else we really will go away."

I think they changed the text between the first time I looked at it and now. :-p
