    Food

I have to second the cooler, if you don't get a room with a fridge. It's a good idea to make a run to the local supermarket and stock up on sandwich stuff and drinks to keep in your room. Not only will if save you a buttload of cash, but you won't have far to walk in the hot sun when you need a bite.

All the food and drink at the AP is insanely overpriced, so bring your own and save your cash for booze!

Also, this site http://www.bigempire.com/vegas/ has a list of all the places you can eat really, really cheap. Note that I say it's cheap, not good.

Now I know some hotels have that "Free Highspeed Internet", otherwise known as a wireless network. So just in case your hotel has this bring your wifi-toys. Oh and I do realise that not all the hotels have this, but that never stopped anyone of you did it? I mean it's Vegas, not Bum F**k Egypt, there WILL be wireless access points, both secure, and unsecure...

Don't listen to douche bag here.... Assume all access points are unsecured.

but don't bring your laptop.. Don't be the guy like "yourwar" who has no friends and comes to Defcon and plays on his 'puter.

Leave the Laptop at home, come to listen to talks, hangout with friends, and participate. Don't sit on your computer at defcon.... Don't be that guy.

I've been to a few DefCon. My view of laptops is different:

            * Are you playing CTF, one of the Wireless Contests, or going to occasionally check your mail/work from the con as a condition of having your attendence paid for by work? Then bring a computer, but limit its use as much as possible so we can talk with you and drink. :-) [Or as ndex pointed out, as a respoitory for storing digital pictures from a camera.]

            * Are you bringing your laptop to play FPS, irc, MUD, IM, etc? Then go ahead and bring it! (If you are doing these things, you are not bugging me nor are you using up space in a presentation room, and this means I won't have to socialize with you.)

At one time-- a *long* time ago, the laptop was great to know what changes were made to the schedule, because the website was kept up-to-date, but the printed schedule was obselete after 2 hours on Friday. Now? Changes are on a TV scheduling channel, posted on TVs, on paper, printed many places and change much less frequently.

Leave the Laptop at home, come to listen to talks, hangout with friends, and participate. Don't sit on your computer at defcon.... Don't be that guy.

                      Meeting people.

                      Hello.

I took my Toshiba Libretto along, no issue whatsoever.
If I can make it work well enough, I intend to drag the PSP along, skip the Libretto, and surf that way.
Defcon is a blast, a fun way to actually learn, between the coke and pizza slop fest.
Remember, it is what YOU make of it.
I intend to have fun, even if that means holding someone over the railing.
