  • Antenna to PC Card (Pigtail or Direct Connection)

Hello, I got an Orinoco PC Card from my dad. I want to make a cantenna for get more range with my Wireless network and do some experimentation.
I was wondering about if I should do a cable that goes from the antenna to the pigtail and then to the pc card, or can I simply get a N-Female from the antenna to MC that goes to the PC card?

    Thanks,

    Luis

Here - check this out pigtail

I built one when I was first learning about WI-FI and exploring its potential. I had no problems with the pigtail.

I am helping you because I know what is like to be new to the con forums.
Just a little advice-- Try google for simple solutions before you post here.

Yeah, I know you can use a pigtail, google is our friend. and I saw that one exacly that you told me. But I was wondering if someone have get a direct cable without using pigtail. Just Antenna to PC Card, no pigtails. (The N-Male in the antenna and in the other side of the cable an MC connector and connect that to the PC Card) I hope you understand what I mean. It's because it will take ages to arrive the pigtail here and it will cost a lot. Like 3 times more. Or doing like that will give problems? I guess no, just wanting to know before I solder.
stringslayer, no a dick, I know the problem that is to control a forum with people who never read the rules or FAQ. Damn, and it takes you take ages to write them.

You can make a long pigtail (MC to N-Male) which will do what you want, or you can go the "normal" route of a short pigtail (MC to N-Male) connected to a standard cable (N-Male to N-Female).

The problem with a long pigtail it that it has very high signal loss, due to the fact that you must use a small, high-loss cable to fit the MC connector. A long pigtail is anything over 18". If the pigtail is too long, you can cut your signal down to the point where it effectively negates the use of the antenna.

Bottom line, if you are going to more than 18" from the card to the antenna, use a short pigtail and a N-F/N-M cable constructed from LMR-200 (or greater).

              Very nice high gain yagi

This mounts to your car fairly easy if you are wardriving. Radio labs also has a nice selection of cables and connectors and idiot proofs the selection to make sure you get the right one according to the card you use.
