I completely forgot about him. He was the guy in the basement in Real Genius who applied a brute force attack to a sweepstakes to increase his chances to win. The guy lived in a freaking closet! (Well, not really, but sort of.)
Laslo is in my top five. I'm going to keep thinking too.
Also I'd have to mention Macgyver... anyone that can build a canoe out of a toothpick while being shot at by nazi's, all on a motorcycle, blindfolded.... is doing good in my book... (heh.)
I was thinking about this last night and MacGyver came to mind as well. I think he reminds me the most of "real" hackers, like my friend who didn't want to buy a replacement battery for a shaver he found so he did a hardware mod so that it would accept rechargeable AA batteries.
This isn't really my favorite and probably won't be a popular choice, being from a movie that sucked and used disco hacking screens (like most of them):
For attitude: The Rat from The Core.
1. Destroying his data when the FBI turns up at his door, with bulk erasers etc.
2. He needed an unlimited supply of hot pockets.
3. "You want me to hack the planet?" Writer's obvious homage to Hackers (not
my favorite either, btw).
4. Using a subchannel to talk to the others at the end of the film.
in line with this thread might be David Strathairn's character, Whistler, in the film Sneakers. i really liked how he was part of the team of security and penetration test experts for his phreaking skills, but the writers never slapped the audience in the face with his backstory... it was just alluded to enough in the details that those in the know could easily identify him early on.
even the fact that he was blind, as some of the earliest phone explorers were, was a nice touch.
if we're counting animated characters, then i'll also mention Ishikawa from KĂŽkaku KidĂŽtai (a.k.a. Ghost in the Shell) since he came across as the most familiar with system security, how to find data, how to access what he needed to get the job done, etc. Also, the fact that his demeanor was completely laid-back at all times and the similarity between his and my taste in apparel made him appealing to me, as well...
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often⊠What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store⊠iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want." - Trent Reznor

what about John Draper's buddy, the one that gave him the whistle, he was blind but i'm not sure if he was actually a phreaker. any one know what his name was?
