It's a good thing we decided against a "piggy back ride on cops back" last year!

Well, there was that one year, that the Scavenger Hunt contest had an item that was crossed off the list shortly after there were complications with the target hotel/casino... actually, didn't something like this happen more than once? ;-)

There were a couple issues in hunts prior to Defcon 12 (the hole in the AP wall at 10, something involving the police that I never got the full details on myself also at either 10 or 11). I can't think of anything really bad that happened in last years hunt, which is good since it was the first year the Scavenger Hunt was an "official" DC contest. That would also be why you might of noticed the item list was really toned down from previous years.

If there was anything near as serious as in that article, it was never "on the list".

There was a list one year that included a specific person's thumb or finger. (I think this was supposed to be a joke item, and I don't know if it was ever removed.)

The was a list that had grass from a hotel/casino but there were either problems with people taking 1foot by 1 foot square chunks of grass and that hotel's security or other risks viewed as potential problems and this item was crossed off of future lists for that con.

        I can't remember other items.

My associate and I managed to get copies of the Scavenger Hunt without the items crossed off of them by bribing one of the people running the contest for an unblemished sheet-- DefCon is so cool that way. :-)

<LEGALCYA> Hey we make no recommendations as to the source of any of the material on the scav hunt list. If you are stupid enough to obtain it illegaly, (and get caught) then you deserve to get tossed in the county lockup. We (DC801) have never had an item on the list that could not be obtained by legal means by someone at defcon.

In addition we are just running a contest, we are not asking you to procure any items or break any laws. You have the choice of what and how you do what you do in life and more importantly, in the DC Scavanger Hunt. </LEGALCYA>

I can think of hair from a certain high profile person, prosthetic limbs, and glass eyeballs, but no digits. Might have been from a scavanger hunt before DC801 started running the contest.

This was an item pre DC801. DC 8 or 9?

Legend has it that this item was successfully turned in by quite a few teams.

Good work. And whoever got the bribe, even better work. <g>

It was a long time ago, and the thumb or finger was worth something like 1000, ro 10000 points. To me, this said that it was a joke item, never meant to actually be acquired.
This was on a list published on a single 8.5x11" paper, and it had two columns ot items. I seem to recall this was on the right column, near the top or middle-top. This was also one of the earliest Scavenger Hunt papers I saw, and it was not at the AP/AV.

            Re: 1x1 ft^2 lawn chunks.
This was an item pre DC801. DC 8 or 9?
I am almost positive it was at the AP/AV, and it was probably the first or second year we were there, but all the years of DefCon blur together for me. :-/

Legend has it that this item was successfully turned in by quite a few teams.
The rumor I heard was there was either a run-in security by one group as they were pulling lawn, or chunks of lawn were noticed as "missing" and when security was dispatched, new attempts to take lawn were intercepted, the truth was passed, and phone calls were made... Both were rumors, and should be treated as such.
Whatever the cause, felt tip markers overstriked that item from new lists being offered from that table.

Good work. And whoever got the bribe, even better work. <g>
It was like $2 or something like that. I did not conduct the bribe-- that was my associate.

The 1X1 patch of grass was DC7 I think, when it was run by the folks at Penguin Palace I believe. I think I've got a copy of the hunt list at home somewhere

If I remember right it was DC 10 that required a 1x1 foot section of grass (from the MGM Grand?).

the 1'x1' section of grass was 7.. and it was to be procured from the Las Vegas Hilton... there were teams that turned it in... but there was only ONE team that got the points for it..... just for the record there were no "problems" with security at teh hilton.... just a little "misunderstnding" due to the ammount of rain that had fallen that year just before DefCon....... want more? buy me beer
If I had a nickle for every time someone offered me ten cents to keep my two cents to myself... I would be a rich man.

The finger/thumb was probably DC6 but could have been DC5. Again, all of these cons blur together for me.

In the future, people will say, "If you can remember DefCon, you probably went to the presentations."
