  • Arena status and team updates - Jun 27

The final additions to the arena were made this weekend:

    1) The railing for the cans is a 1 1/2" piece of aluminum L-bar that runs the length of the top of the 2' wall. The cans will be evenly distributed across it.

    2) The flooring was selected as being a white drop-cloth which will be held down by the arena itself. It's highly IR reflective and we got it from the painting section at Lowes.

What's the team statuses out there? I'd hate to go through all this work if no one will be ready :) I know that *some* of the teams out there must be getting pretty close to having a working design!

The contest nears and team Irvine Underground is still going strong. We look forward to the competition this year and seeing what the other teams have done!

      Almost...

We are cutting it pretty close.

We have a complete vehicle that will pickup, shoot and drive but we still have a lot of tweaks. We should be finishing up this weekend and ship it out on Monday or Tuesday.

This is a home made vehicle, made from spare parts (except for wheels and motors). We used sheet metal, rivets and aluminum .Primary tools were shears, a set of files, jigsaw, and a drill. It started out being AI but I had problems with bad sensors and just ran out of time and money, it is RC controlled now. The firing mechanism is a air compressor taken out of a DC air pump piped into a camping fuel tank. The camping fuel tank is connected to a sprinkler valve with a solenoid for firing which is attached to a PVC pipe that acts as our barrel. We load balls into the barrel and shoot. We collect balls by air suction, 3 RC motors running forward and back. The air suction picks up balls and puts them in a staging area so when we reverse the motors it puts them into a loading area for the gun. This puppy is LOUD.

At a few feet with 60 psi we can do some damage to a can.

Sounds good 3l3g1n, we look forward to seeing what you built, looks like you have been touching on stuff similar to what we have done in previous years/are doing this year. What kind of sensor issues did you have? Look forward to seeing what your bot can do at con.

                  When is the contest and...?

What day is the contest taking place on, when/can we practice, and if one of the members is not part of the conference can he still participate(does he have to pay for a badge)?

Also how many teams are there?

                    Oops..

The forum defaults to view only the last months threads. So revision to the above question, is afternoon 2ish or 6ish?

Last I heard contest is 11am Saturday, and a cometitor meeting sometime friday. Check the program for details. With regards to the badge, Im pretty sure the "all persons on property must have a badge" line still holds.

Thanks on the badge... There is nothing on the program for this event.

My plan is to set the arena up thursday night in the contest room, which means it will be available for practice all friday and saturday morning. You are responsible for safety though, so bring a sheet or something if you plan on firing the gun :)

Competitor meeting is friday some time (I think it's in the printed program, if not stop by the contest room and I'll have a sign). Contest is saturday at 11am. The "let the public pull the trigger" EFF donation time will be after the contest.
