however, i have to ask, growing accustomed to using spelling tools (as many of us are) does anyone ever use Google as a spell checker, or am i the only one?

Yeah, I do that all the time, as my spelling is typically horrendous. However, the new Google toolbar for Firefox has a fascinating feature: a spell checker. The only reason I keep the tool bar (I now have three different ways to access Google from my browser) is because of this nifty little tool. It will check whatever you have typed into form box, and gives you various words that you may have been attempting to spell. It has been a life saver for me.
