Cab. The AP is actually right next to the airport. Heck, if you wanted to save a few bucks, hop the free Hard Rock shuttle then just walk across the street when you get there.

Ya, unless you are staying at a hotel on the other side of town or plan on doing some sightseeing (hoover dam, lake mead, etc) dont even bother with a rental car. I rented a car for defcon once. I drove it from the airport lot to the hotel. It then sat for several days, then I drove it back to the airport. At 23 bucks a day it ended up being far more expensive than if I had just taken a taxi too and from. Luckily it got written off as a business expense.

There are private airport shuttle comapnies (exit KLAS baggage claim area on the opposite end of the building from the taxi side) that will charge $4-6 to shuttle you to any strip area hotel (AP/AV) included.
Do I have to look like I have, you know, Money to get on that shuttle ?
*If* I can afford the plane ticket, I'll be carrying some clothes and enough gear to on a floor/outside, so I might not look the part.
Would it help if I wore a straw hat and a hawaiian shirt ?
Don't forget you're also going to need $80 to get in plus money for food and drinks. Food can be had cheap, but there's not much by way of budget food within comfortable walking distance. There's the $1.99 steak and eggs at Terribles from 11pm-7am (I think, double check). $6.66 for steak and shrimp at the Hard Rock. Also figure in money for bottled water, which is really expensive at the AP. A few extra bucks to use as a bribe for floor space doesn't hurt either. Outside is not recommended, as it is hot and people will take advantage of your misfortune. Realistically, you're going to need to have about $150 on hand for the weekend, at a bare minimum.

I don't know if that is an issue (I've never taken the Hard Rock shuttle), but good point. Another perspective might be: "The Hard Rock shuttle is going to the same location whether you are on it or not". In general, people don't like to create challenges so don't give the impression that you will back down easily and I can't see there being a problem.

Walking is even more of an option since you are travelling light.
Another suggestion that might work (depending on when you arrive and how comfortable you are talking to people): wait around at the airport, look for other Defcon types (it is pretty amazing how much they stand out), and split the cost of the taxi. While I have never sought out Defcon attendees at the airport, I do run into people all along the strip at all hours so your chances might be good.
