  • What College?

Well time I got one more year at Peninsula College and I feel that I want to Major in Network Security. I've been doing the Associate degree to get a feel on what i want to do in my life. Now that I have found what I want to do. Now the question that comes to mind is: what would be the best college to attend, or colleges for a network security degree?

The NSA has a number of schools they have deemed 'Centers of Academic Excellence'. This may help you out.

I recommend UC Davis (where I'm currently attending) if you can get in up here. You'll note its on that list Noid posted, unlike Berkeley and those other loser UCs :D etc. Great atmosphere as far as the town goes. Not a giant city, but not ridiculously small. The engineering/CS department is really great, the majority of the teachers I've had so far are very cool. One downside: its ridiculously hot here during the summer.

        good schools

if you cant get into UC Davis, you could always go to Portland State University (pdx.edu) :-)

At PSU, they pretty much just let anyone in, and if they cant handle it, they change majors pretty quick. There were over 200 people in my cs161 class (first class in cs), and then 19 in my cs202 class (the sequence is 161,162,163,202)

PSU is the only school on that NSA list in oregon, and theres a ton of really good professors working on some very cool projects, and undergrads are more than welcome to help out in research groups (unlike most good schools that only allow grads to be in research groups)

Also the hacker scene in portland is pretty good, with many groups that meet regularly (pdx2600, CRIME, pdxLUG, pdxALUG, personaltelco, dc503, etc..) Portland is also very big in the whole open source thing too, like with the open source development labs, and with Linus moving here.

Its worth taking a look at.

One of the first schools to get the NSA accreditation was the Tacoma Campus of UW. Like Oregon, there's a fairly active scene occuring in Washington. The difference being they have a better coastline while we pay less taxes. That and why go for second hand smoke when you can get cancer radiating directly from the heart of Redmond?

I'm majoring in CS with BIG focus on network/computer security... I'm going to be going to davis soon. For obvious reasons (-heat). I might've talked to you at toorcon with another friend of mine going to davis. Your name start with a C?
I think davis is a pretty good college town too. I can't wait to transfer.

Unfortunately wasn't me, have yet to be able to make it to toorcon. Lot of cool computer people up here at Davis though so you should enjoy it a lot. The heat is killer though. Check out CS club when you get up here. Its either really lame or really cool depending on how many people and who shows up and what the speech/meeting is on. Either way its free food. My name is Zac btw.
