Some might suggest price fixing, but competing hotels raise prices partly as a result of notification... blocks of rooms at other hotels are held by DefCon organizers for DefCon, thus giving them notice of the convention as well.

As for prices, July and August are two HUGE months (historically) for tourism as people arrange for their summer vacations. This is also a contribubting factor. Price increases were also common during COMDEX at its height-- when finding a free room in Las Vegas was generally difficult and expensive.
True. One reason I try to take my vacations between Thanksgiving and Xmas. Lot less people traveling.

heh... how many people here were at ShmooCon in DC? being there at the same time as GodCon or whatever it was called made for some interesting moments. i remember a night after leaving HighWiz's room that i and a couple ladies were standing by an elevator, lecturing to (pleasantly curious) evangelicals about the benefits of vulnerability exploration and open disclosure.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Yup, I remember the preacher and flock at DC8, I was as surprised as they were. I hope they found a good place for their needs.

My wife got in the elevator Sunday morning at shmoocon, and listened to a bunch of women bitch about how hung over they all were. She was a bit shocked when she realized that they were all equipped with the nunchuck-sized wooden crosses around their necks and their nametags all started with "Sister".

The con before DC11 at the AP was a convention for girl cheerleaders/dance squad and after DC11 it was a convention for transvestite roman catholics.
