  • PhreakNIC 9

Hi gang, I'm thinking about attending PhreakNIC 9 in Nashville TN this October.
Has anyone here been to this CON? Is it worth the frequent flyer miles to attend? What goes on besides the talks?

Never been but from what Ive heard alot of gaming.
Lan games, console games and magic card games.

I've been tempted to go before. I had the same debate..
Admission is cheep, but is it worth a plane ticket?

I went last year and was very disappointed. It was mostly gamers and anime geeks moreso than hackers and phreakers. The hotel it was held in was in the ghetto of Nashville. It was so ghetto, there were plastic sheets on the bed and the McDonald's down the road had a sign specifying no backpacks or bedrolls. Definitely not on my agenda this year.

At face value I'd be keen to attend, but digging deeper perhaps it isn't what it says on the tin

Jesus, were you allowed to eat burgers on the premises?! I've never seen that before

I've seen it in one or two places where there's a high transient / homeless population (San Francisco, I'm looking at you). It's mostly to prevent things like napkins, cups, toilet paper, etc. walking off at an alarming rate.

I was in some little town in colorado, had like 5 businesses, population had to be 20 or less. It was a fishing town, the gas/grocery/bait/post office store had a paper sign on the door.

I concur with Octalpuss...aside from one or two talks that had nominal interest, it wasn't worth all I had to go through to get there. And yes, the venue is totally ghetto. I have spent time in some nasty little podunk places, but that one takes the prize.

The german restaurant and the band of gypsies that went there were the highlight of that con. :-) Oh, and OP getting chosen for Hacker Hookup. Priceless!

LET US REPHRASE!! ***I*** was not chosen, my question was. I would never put myself at the mercy of those miscreants. Those were some nasty little nerds. I'm just glad I could entertain the 3 people in the audience geeky enough to understand the question.

If you are in the neighborhood or it is a short drive, it may be worth it.. but I would not spend lots of $$$ on it if I did not have it to blow.
