How about a foot race from the Riviera to the AP? Racers would have to wear some sort of identification and along the way we could put checkpoints that give a task that has to be accomplished. The tasks could vary depending on location (like the tasks on the Amazing Race. Given this is Defcon so I'm sure we would have to up the ante). We could also plant distractions (of some sort) and things that would slow people down more. Alot of options come up, such as making two separate routes. Lets say one route has less checkpoints than another, but the overall distance is greater.

The winner is the person that completes all the checkpoints first and gets to the AP. It'd be easy to spot cheaters because it would become obvious if they got from checkpoint to checkpoint too quickly. The prize could be free admission to Defcon 14 (or just giving the people $80 if it happens once the Con has started), a t-shirt saying something about how they won, and some swag. Second and third place winners could get a t-shirt saying they came in second/third and some swag.

I think it'd be a fun alternative for people who want a scavenger hunt-esque experience that doesn't take much con time away.

They managed to catch the liquor store in the corner of the pic. I mentioned it in a previous post. I think thats the closest one to the Riviera. Its about 1 block south. Great pics, I just got a chance to look at them.. The convention space looks promising, as far as the information part of Defcon I think it will go off without a hitch, as for the party part, I still hold my concerns about the rooms, DJ's and pool.

That would be kinda fun...you know up the ante a little bit make it so only the hardcore would be stupid enough to go for it. I could see it now a Smoky and the Bandit-esque chase down the strip.

The management has been very very cool so far, and they have all kinds of strange convenetions there from Tatoo and fetish shows to English dart throwing groups.

Incidently, the dart throwing competition is the same weekend as Defcon. I believe they do have amature competitions if theres anyone else on here who throws darts.

i'm curious if has there been any word yet on two questions that, as far as i know, have not been publicly resolved:

1. whether there will be an opportunity for any kind of DefCon TV (either movie channel or talk feeds) broadcast into the hotel's cable system

2. whether management of the hotel has agreed that attendees will be able to DJ and just generally be loud and partying by the poolside 24/7

i'm hoping that we get a solid answer out of the hotel staff before the con. even if there's some set of rules attached (like "parties and drinking etc can continue poolside but DJs have to stop at 2 AM" or something like that) i'd be happier knowing that there's a concrete foundation. i may be in the minority, but i much prefer clearly-defined boundaries (even if they are ones i don't like) as opposed to arbitrary enforcement of rules being made-up at the whim of whatever guards are walking around. i still have the occastional shudder when i recall last summer seeing AP security people (the most belligerent of whom used tape to cover up their name badges) just pulling nonsense out of their ass and harrassing attendees in wildly inconsistent ways.

Remember the walkway that they had just poured by pool 3? I was walking on it on Saturday well after it was dry and a guard yelled, "You can't walk on that!". I saw him on it about an hour later.
