  • Self Resistance Exercise

While browsing Zen websites I came along "Zen and the Art of Self Resistance". These are all exercises you can do without any equipment which I know is a bonus to us computer types.
    http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/shenandoah/OBB/OBB.html

The thing is, I don't see how some of these could be very effective. Particularly the chest exercises. Some of them would obviously work, but it seems hit or miss. Could someone with a knowledge of exercise (this is just a GREAT board to ask something like that in) shed some light?

I practice bujinkan, which is to say "ninjitsu". We have simular excersizes. These are for toning the muscles. Here's how I understand it works:

You have to stretch first, as with any excersize or you could cause yourself injury, that's why the stretching/warmup is there.

Once your "warmed up" the blood is able to reach your muscles better, enabling you to bend in ways you do not normally, or bend for "abnormal" periods of time in a position. This tempers your muscles, and allows them to grow, sort of like lifting weights.

Once you are finished, there is a "cool down" period, in which time your muscles return to their average state.

If you do this on a regular basis you will actually be fit much better than many body builders because it is "useable muscle" and not "show muscle" simular to SF training.

Oh, and the breathing excersizes are because 70% of the world, or more do not breathe correctly. It is to teach you how to breathe the right way so that you have a larger lung capacity. I, personally, find it rather useful for managing my asthma.

      self resistance is futile
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

This is what they call isometric excercise. You use your muscles against each other to build them up. Its a good part of any workout routine as it helps build lean muscle mass. If I remember right it the muscle that gets built up is the fast twitch muscle (to oversimplify it, fast twich muscle provides your strength, slow twich provides endurance). Its good stuff, and you can practice it at your desk or in your room. Go find a picture of Bruce Lee and check out the muscles on that guy, he did nothing but isometric excercise, never lifted weights.

I return whatever i wish . Its called FREEDOWM OF RANDOMNESS IN A HECK . CLUSTERED DEFEATED CORn FORUM . Welcome to me

Yeah, same excersized the samauri used, and those guys could stop a sword at your throat and draw just a drop of blood.

Actually, I read that they also cut rose petals in the air as the fell too. That takes some good reflexes.

Never heard of that. I'd have to check it out becuase it sounds very interesting.
And about the exercises, as Ridirich already said, the breathing is one of the most important things. A few friends of mine consider themselves "body builders" but none of the breaths correctly (makes one wonder how they make their muscles grow ;) ).

Don't knock it, till you try it man. Seriously.

I got an anger problem...in other words, I let it build up, and if you happen to rub me the wrong way, I blow up.

Removing myself from the situation and doing my breathing excersizes reduce the chemical flowing to my body that makes me feel on the agressive side. Rather helpful for not making an ass of yourself.

That, and Siviak is very skilled in rubbing the right way, just wait until he tracks you down...drunk on Thursday morning before con, wearing only wet shorts, asking you for his shoes.

Ah, I wonder if that explains the knife holes in your shirt and not your body at DC13. :>
