  • EM Wand? who made one?

This question refers to something at Defcon 7 I think. Someone made a small wand well, small wnough to carry and not have people stare. I cannot remember who it was, but it gave a strong enough blast that the magnetic field could penetrate a car far enough to disable the internal computer, or so he claimed. If this is possible, I'd love to hear your opinions and if anyone can device such a devious device, I would like to know.

    Was that Phon-E?
I seem to recall there were legal issues, and Shipley lent use of Jennifer Granick as legal support when LEO showed up.

Search google for "HERF" or "HERF Gun" and on related topic, check out "EMP Bomb" and if you really get into this and do not get into safety, then look up things like "electrical burns" and "trips to the hospital."

At lower power, you can disrupt electronic devices forcing reboots, at higher powers, you can trash some EEPROM and Firmware, [somewhere between there and the next, you can fry living bits] and at even higher powers, you can fry hardware.

Do HERF Guns exist? Depends on your definition and what you think qualifies.

It might have been him, not sure. I'm looking for something a little more focussed than a herf gun. and an EM bomb is a little too destructive for me. I would say what I want it for, but I'm not sure I will be helped if anyone knows my devious plans....

Yeah, and risk having this thread moved to a /dev/null space if what you were trying to do was be harmful to other people or their property.

I would never do anything that would be harmful to anyone or their property. that is vicious, not devious.

Which is why I never refer to my project as the Prius Toaster.

              Old HERF type links..

Here are some past speeches from Winn that deal with some of these topics.

wow.. that Dark Tangent guy is handy to have around. I wonder why he doesn't post more...
If I had a nickle for every time someone offered me ten cents to keep my two cents to myself... I would be a rich man.

On that note, I have heard that a stun gun to the antenne of a car can frag the sound system.. can anyone confirm this? (Not suggesting you try it, of course)

I've heard this too. Haven't tried it myself, so take this for what it's worth, but here's my $0.02: it's not *totally* bullshit. That is, it may work, but probably only if the stereo isn't properly grounded and can't isolate the current flowing back into it.

Some older stereos used a single ground point, which was usually where the body contacted the antenna (if you were really unlucky, this was also the speaker earth) - my old Rover had such a deck, but it was a 1970's-era LW/MW mono receiver-only unit; if the antenna lost contact with the body, all radio went out. in modern vehicles the stereo is provided with its own unique ground path (though that may gorund to a common point with other devices), so even if the antenna is torn clean out it'll still function.

I don't have an exact link for this, but a while back Top Gear (the BBC's motoring programme/magazine) put a 2004 or 2005 model-year VW Golf in a lightning simulator (complete with the presenter in the driver's seat!) and blasted it with a half-dozen simulated strikes. The computer survived, the car drove off, and even the stereo still worked. This tells me that while there may be some truth to the stun gun question, we've probably figured out how to get around it by now.
