  • Invitation only TCP/IP embedded device contest interest?

Doing some footwork- wondering how much interest there would be for a closed contest involving teams of 3-5 people who would be given a kit and have a specific amount of time at con (like 2-5 hours say) for a build contest- If the parameters were unknown prior to the contest, and the 'kits' were provided, how many 3-5 person teams would have interest? Thoughts?

what type of skills would be nessecary for this challenge? Could we bring or own software/laptops for possible programming of chips etc. or would that also be provided?

Not sure, hence the questions...forming this one as we go. Most likely a CD/DVD with software/datasheets/compilers would be provided with a 'kit'- I would assume basic coding skills, basic mechanical skills, basic electronic skills. Hence the need for 'teams'- you could try to structure a team to cover the requisite skill base required...

Also considering tools- possibly bread board only (no soldering) - or BASIC (READ: no surface mount) soldering skills....

I'd be interested, and can think of a couple of guys that might be possible teammates on it.

sounds like fun, i would say i would like to know the nature of what im building before so that i can brush up on some things that way i would know how to use what im givin.

Yeah. I originally brought this up to Lost in email a few weeks ago. The idea is to revamp the contest so some or at least one aspect of it didn't require months of prep work constructing something. Something so maybe people could show up and see whatever project we're doing is neat and be able to enter a team or something of that nature.

I like that point of view. Coming from entering the robot contest, putting all the time into building something is hard, and a lot of work and I think that is what is keeping people from entering, I like these contests insofar as it gives people the chance to build something really cool and show it off at con, and there should be a place for that. It is unfortunate that both these (really cool) contests have suffered from low turn out, it seems the at con contests (CTF/scavenger hunt/HJ etc.) are the popular ones. Good luck with this one- I would love to see it evolve into something good!

                  low attendance

It is sad that there is low attendance in what you would think would be a large turnout contest. One of the issues i have personaly is cost. All the high turnout games you listed are no cost. I think that local groups are the only way to go in these type of games, they lower the cost per person and can help with tasks. In my experiance finding a local group can be a challange.

This seems like it would be excellent to tie this in with the mystery box contest.

that is a very good question, the challenge is always a mystery but if you dial 555-8765 you may find what you are looking for.

That aside this sounds like a good challenge
