  • Phone-Comp. Communication

The phone in question here being a Siemens M35.
Suppose all you have is a computer running Linux OS. It has a parallel port, and serial ports. I know there are ways you can use to send bits of info through the ports using the ioport () and stuff alike. But I would like to now how you could reprogram such a phone in whatever way you want. Supposing I don't have the data cable that the manufacturer may usually produce. I would like to know everything from the electronics to programming. If you can you could use diagrams or you could just simply direct me to a site that can answer all my questions. Adios todos!

You need to define what you mean by 'reprogram' in this case - but, in general, it's going to be highly-dependent on the manufacturer and model of phone.

Start looking for pinouts in order to build your own. Does it have another way of connecting to it? These are questions you might want to be asking yourself.

First one's free: I'm willing to bet that if you were to Google 'cellphone forums' or similar you'd probably find at least one hit in the first page of results that would at least be able to better point you in the right direction.

Okay,I think I will work with that for now. By reprogramming I meant that you could make changes in the options, put in new features such as geek mail instead of messages. And also, what language does one use when making animations that you would place in a phone by yourself. Anyway, i'm off to do research on that and hell of alot of other electronics. Thanks Skroo, hola back!

        Most appilcations are java-based
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Again, though, it depends on the phone. Annoyingly, even on phones that do run Java, there's a wide range of JDKs in use out there so trying to make the same application work across a range of phones can be a real bitch. Symbian was a good approach to eliminating this problem (and was built by ex-Psion people, so ruled right from the start), but never caught on to the degree it needed to in order to be useful.

I remember trying to make MindTerm work on the Samsung E105 using Samsung's JDK... God, was that a nightmare. I could get it to more or less display a terminal, but could never get it to do so in any sort of useful way. Love Samsung's phones, hate how they keep the OS relatively proprietary.
