  • Merry Christmas

(this went out to the la2600 list earlier - but the sentiment still stands.)

...And a happy new year to you all. Sending this out early since I'm likely to not be in front of keys for the next few days.

    On a personal note:

If anyone takes objection to my wishing them a Merry Christmas, they can eat a bag of shit. I refuse to buy into this 'happy holidays' crap, and will continue to wish my Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, and <insert religion or otherwise here> friends the absolute best that the season has to offer. Note that my wishing someone a Merry Christmas does not impose my beliefs upon them any more than it refuses them the ability to pursue their own.

Oh, yeah, and if I'm offered a 'happy Hanukkah', 'joyous Eid Mubarak', or 'festive Bharat', or other appropriate greeting, I'll take it.

So, again, Merry Christmas, and all the best to you and yours for 2006.

      Merry Christmas!!!

Skroo this one is for you:
I really wanted to send out some sort of holiday greeting but it is so difficult in today's world to know exactly what to say without offending someone. So I met with my attorney yesterday, and on his advice, I want to say to all of you:

“Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit my best wishes for an environmentally-conscious, socially-responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.

I also wish you a fiscally-successful, personally-fulfilling, and medically-uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2006, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great (not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country or is the only "AMERICA" in the western hemisphere), and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, or sexual preference of the wishee.

By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.

I have heard "Happy Holidays!" and "Seasons Greetings!" for at least fifteen years now, and suddenly this year it became an issue (thanks, O'Reilly). Of course it is a diversionary tactic (approval ratings are down, scandals are up ... oooh, look at all the repressed Christians), but it has proven to be highly effective.

Myself? Gift-giving holidays bug me. How about you don't give me crap I don't want/need because of some arbitrary point in time, and I'll follow your lead? How about we give out gifts when the fancy strikes us? How about giving me the freedom to buy something for myself in October without complaints that "it would have made a good Christmas gift"?

I think Stephen Colbert said it best: "No matter what religion you celebrate this season, have a Merry Christmas".

Especially now that Christmas is practiced by so many non-Christians that it has essentially reverted back into being an areligious celebration.

So now that I've totally fallen for the troll, I'll close by saying that I hope everything is going well for those that haven't been "/dev/null"ed ... as I'll continue to hope for another seven months until I once again see everyone in person.

meh.. its always been pagen, whether [insert sect here] believes it or not is their own shortcoming. Everything you hear from various factions is simply a justification for why the holiday is considered part of their religion. bah humbug

so to divert this from turning into an unholy war of the third order...

From December 23rd through the end of December 26th, my employer recognizes a holiday that obliges them to either pay me for not working at all, or to pay me 2.5 times as much should I decide to walk against the tides of those wanting it off. That is perfectly good enough reason to celebrate in my opinion, whether you desire to personally add additional meaning or not.

Cheers to all that make Defcon what it is. It has been another good year on the forums, irc, dc503, and other places in between humanity. I've met some new friendly personalities to tackle at Defcon 14, fought to stay in touch with others that have busy and conflicting schedules, bashed a few tards, and acted like a complete jerkoff with some of the finest dorkiest people on teh Intarweb.. Cheers.

Whoah whoah whoah, you forgot Boxing Day (Canada)! And what about Kwanzaa?! Not to mention, it's never to early to start celebrating the Chinese New Year. I'm sorely offended.

Just kidding. A Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good nyte. (Get it, sort of like byte. Ha ha ha...ha...)

When I wish others a Merry Christmas it is not imposing a religious belief upon them. I merely wish for them peace, happiness, prosperity, and good health. How anyone could object to someone else wishing that good befall them is beyond my scope of understanding. I continue to wish all a Merry Christmas and raise my glass to them in friendship and good cheer. As old farts are prone to do, I will spend my Christmas surrounded by those I hold dearest and with the memories of those no longer by my side. May your Christmas be filled with family, love, laughter, peace, and joy. I raise my glass to you, comrades.

Just so that we are clear, the complaint is wishing a Christmas-celebrator "Happy Holidays" and not people upset over others wishing others "Merry Christmas". (Oh sure, a few people may have complained as they always will, but all this media hoopla is definitely over the former and not the latter.)

When someone says happy holidays I say "which one?".

                      To: Voltage Spike's 1st post

The reason that O'Reilly is covering it now is because it's gotn' alot of attetion because stuff like wallmart won't let the charity santas stand out side of their store anymore or town squares can't play Christmas music any more.

                      To: Voltage Spike's 2nd post

Thats the way it is now because us christians got pissed off after being sued by the ACLU for "imposing religeon" and "not keeping church and state seprate".

I think people are too anal sometimes.

I, personally, do not reconize Kawanza, and anyone that celibrates a holiday created by the writters of a sitcom needs their heads checked. Then again, that is a choice I have made, however...

I reconize Hanukkah as it was the first religious event, historically, then Yule, as it was the second and finally Christmas as it was the third(though it should not be in December, the Catholic Church moved the holiday for reasons unknown.) and will wish our Canadian friends a nice 'Boxing Day'.
