stay safe. and, of course, if you come across any stray ordinance or gear... you know, stuff that on a sheet somewhere is marked as "never recovered from battlefield"... feel free to send it our way for fun and safekeeping. (i've often wondered just how cheap it is possible to obtain AKs or other spiffy whatnot in hot areas of the world. suppose it's not worth the risk to life and limb or the fact that one winds up in violation of stateside laws that way... but still, the image of some random street market with rifles going for like $50 to $100 USD drifts through my imagination from time to time.)
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I suspect it would be even cheaper than that (which makes the image all the more enticing...)!

The area has AKs like geeks have blank CDs. Thery are all over the freakin' place. I doubt I will be bringing any home though.

How about I write "With love from Deviant Ollam" on a bullet and if I use it I bring you the casing. :>

how often do they manage to walk off? (i'd bet it's more likely to happen at the hands of contractors and other third parties as opposed to people in uniform whose packages back home are -- i would assume -- inspected prior to shipment.)

hmm... don't know if i'd be a fan of that idea or not. i tend to have a libertarian view of the world and our nation's foreign affairs... i'm fiercely pro-soldier but staunchly anti-war. i wish that you weren't being shipped out and that others who are in-country right now were returning home. pity that real life isn't so simple.

                Don't lose hope

So, you can't get an AK from astcell. But don't worry, I hear they're going for like $15 USD a pop in Panama. Have fun trying back though. ;)

@astcell, I wish you the best of luck while you are over there. There are some of us who still respect the folks in the armed forces.
Every signature I can think of at the moment is completely moronic. (the irony)

Yeah, just stay safe and come back soon. As Deviant Ollam said, I wish all our soldiers would return home safe.

I wish all of theirs would too.. but I guess some folks just can't get along..
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Thanks for your thoughts folks, hope to be able to stay in touch whilst away. I am still here for a tad longer, I managed one night at Shmoocon even. We shall see what the future holds.

As for folks who think I can brink back cases of AKs, I'd like to know what you travel with. :> I am allowed three duffle bags only, and as I am 6'4 all my stuff takes up 5. I'll be lucky to get my armor on the plane. I have not even taken one picture yet, and for folks who know me, they will never believe it. I hope not to travel too light.

so, what (if any) ideas do you plan on running with from the desert island thread? here's to your safe journey, safe return, and plenty of reading time (as opposed to trigger time) over there.

I have a laptop with 60GB HDD, a 40GB USB drive, a 60GB USB drive, Dell Axim with 2 1GB SD cards, 4GB CF card, 8GB CF card, 40GB iPod, 5 USB keys from 512MB to 2GB, all chock full to the brim with data. Add to that a video camera with a hard disk capable of 37 hours of video, I may have some potential.

                            A few suggestions...

Try to keep your head down and your morale up. Keep your canteen full. Find the oldest (longest in country) Sgt. that you can find and stay right by his side. Sargents tend to live longer than green LT's. RTO's attract the most fire. Don't worry about bringing weapons back, but be sure to take a hide out gun along with you...they come in handy (a nice little .38 for tight places). When in doubt, shoot first ask questions later. Trust nobody. Good luck Astcell. Stay safe.
I enjoy talking to myself...it's usually the only intelligent conversations I get to have.
