I saw the preview to this in theaters and thought it was a new Ford commercial. I then saw Keanu and knew he meant business. I've been looking forward to this ever since.

Not to mention that I am a big Keanu fan, even if he can only say, "Whoa..." and sound convincing. His last few films have been great though, so I am looking forward to this.

It does .. I'm pretty impressed by the art and the storyline kinda seems original matrix-esque. Nifty at minimum.

wow... looks pretty interesting. i love the rotoscope animation technique. richard linklater used that same style in what is one of my absolute favorite films ever, waking life.

yah, I was blabbing about that to Bascule in chatting and he mentioned Walking Life as well. I knew the rotoscope technique has been around for a while but I hadn't seen it as an enhancement to animated characters like this before .. ie better depth to eyes/mouth than normally drawable. Very cool, imo.

i usually shy away from such overt and -- dare i -- say corny-sounding advice... but pull a few thick bingers and then watch waking life... it will send your notion of "very cool" into entirely new dimensions. then again, this is sagely advice only if you are very much in to philosophy and altered states of mind.

When I originally read that Linklater was doing an animated project, I immediately dismissed the idea of a Waking Life style ... glad to know I was wrong. Perhaps this is an "art house" film. I can't really see massive audiences being drawn to the movie if it is anything like the novel.

That's not fair. True that there isn't much in the way of scifi-geek films (although Ultraviolet should be good for those of us who enjoyed Equilibrium), but we should see Night Watch, Pan's Labyrinth, Special and Lady Vengeance in the "something different" category. With any luck, V For Vendetta will turn out well despite being being made more "palatable" than its source.

Of course, I know that I have more faith in people than you, skroo. I'm probably just being suckered again.

I own a copy of Nightwatch (1994) (dk) and Nightwatch (1997)(us) (I give these "two thumbs up" -- If you have seen these, you get what I am saying. ;-)

Now I see 2 more are listed in imdb: Nighwatch (2004)(ru) and Nightwatch 2 (2006)(ru).

You simply have to find the ambiguity, don't you? Yes, the 2004 Russian film that has finally found a distributor for the United States. Although the movie promises to be visually appealing, two things helped it stand out. One trailer is the film in high speed where they slow it down to show off interesting scenes. The other is that the subtitles are animated in such a way that they complement with what is happening within the scene.

For those that might be interested (and don't mind standing in line), they are currently giving away passes for a free screening in a handful of cities.

To be honest, I didn't like Equilibrium that much - it struck me as being a good idea not executed as well as it could've been. Maybe I'll rent it and give it another shot, but if Ultraviolet can do what Equilibrium didn't for me, it should be decent.

Honestly... I'm not sure that it necessarily comes down to having faith in people; I know that there're some spectacular movies out there that could be made. It's just that I look at the formulaic and/or rehashed drek that seems to be the hallmark of contemporary cinema and don't expect much. Yeah, there's always been more chaff than wheat, but good God does the bar seem lower than ever right now.

I think Brick looks like a film folks from our crowd will like. I know I am waiting for it. Noir is always good and mixing it with a high school movie is an interesting idea.

And I know video game movies almost always suck, but I have big hopes for the Silent Hill movie. That is the only series of games I have ever taken the time to beat every installment of.
