If I get word that Ultraviolet isn't completely horrible I'll probably download it just to see Milla Jovovich in all those awesome outfits. She's sporting quite the awesome hairstyle (wig?) for that movie too...

You did see the trailer, right? Aeon Flux sucked, therefore I would assume the movie that almost has the same lines of dialogue in the trailer will suck too.

i actually thought it wasn't as horrible as some people did. of course, the entire philosophical arc was lost when they made the monicans a hidden subculture within bregna as opposed to a separate civilization that lived outside of the city walls... that was disapointing. but, i assumed that most people didn't get that reference anyway in the original so i wasn't shocked to see it totally ruined in the feature film.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Being a fan of the cartoon, I was dissapointed by that too. I was hoping they would put some animated sequences in the movie (ala Tank Girl), but that wouldn't have set well with the bland futuristic overlord sci-fi landscape they had in the movie. :)

First of all, I have trouble relating two movies with different directors, actors, and plot lines.

Second, I didn't think Aeon Flux sucked. My theory is that people don't like movies where characters are prohibitied from demonstrating any emotion. It is difficult to relate to a character's actions when that character apparently has a complete disinterest in said actions.

My other theory is that audiences have trouble accepting action movies with a female lead.

I have no trouble accepting a female lead in an action flick, especially one from the Aeon Flux series. I have not yet seen the movie, will probably just buy it when it comes out on DVD.

Now I did buy the animated version and it came with a short with real actors/actresses. It was GREAT! I was hoping the movie would be as awesome.

I suppose I was not clear. Both of my theories concerning audience behavior (in other words, ticket sales) were not about conscious decisions. I don't hear people discussing either issue (at least not regularly). I am more concerned with assigning causation for correlation: I frequently see movies with a certain trait fail and blame the trait.

Note that both assertions have been somewhat validated by psychological studies in related areas (or so I have been told by friends in the field).

Also note that, unsurprisingly, it appears that female sidekicks/partners do not suffer the same problem. I haven't looked into it but having a female lead probably helps (as long as the female isn't the only hero).

That doesn't mean he is a great commercial success, though, and that might have something to do with his complaints.

The way they cut it reads, "Movie studios refuse to give me an unlimited budget even though they can afford it ... they essentially steal from me." I think the cut part relates to either "creative" accounting practices or that studios are stealing from the public by refusing to invest more. He may have a point, but there is a good chance he wouldn't be complaining if he actually made money for people.

This thread makes me want to see Aeon Flux... although the rumours that float around it are not really encouraging. ....So, yes or no?

Prior to seeing another movie, I stopped in and watched about twenty minutes of Aeon Flux, Either that was the worst twenty minutes of the movie, or the whole thing just wasn't very good. I'd say no.

I am curious if Ultraviolet if going to be better or worse than Aeon Flux though.

Aeon Flux would've been better if:

                            - They had decided to stay remotely true to the show
                            - They cast Milla Jovovich as Aeon
                            - They cast Hugo Weaving as Trevor Goodchild

The show was amazing. It's been a long-running tendancy to stray as far away from the original as possible. Which I can understand to an extent, but it would have been better had it been more true.

                              - They cast Milla Jovovich as Aeon
That would help a lot of movies out. Can't deny a movie with Milla in it.

                              - They cast Hugo Weaving as Trevor Goodchild
I really wish this had happened now that you mention it.

Something that has to be taken into consideration is what about the movie you are going to see. For some people it's to see if it's true to the show, others its for the action, or maybe the special effects, and there are various other reasons. So, some people will be satisfied whereas others walk out of the theater wondering why they wasted their money and time.
