  • Hacker Holidays... what historical events would be good holidays?

What events in history (with respect to hacking) should be commemorated every year like a holiday? What would you choose?
    The first Apple personal Computer?
Birthday of Babbage? Lovelace? Go-Live Date for ENIAC?
    Gutenberg?
    Memorable Physicist birthdays?
Birth of Vacuum tube? Transistor?IC? VHSIC? multi-core?
    First Defcon Event?

What about "inventions" by accident or serendipity?

Protocols, standards, RFC? (TCP/IP? HTML? HTTP? Telnet? FTP? ssh?

    Duct tape first sold?

    Code broken? Patent expiration?

You get the idea. Come up with events and dates they should be celebrated, and maybe a reason why.

How about DT's birthday? Or better yet, the day he conceived of Defcon? Surely that moment ranks up there with the flux capacitor.

Yeah, those would be good. Date of first announcement (including time) and first online discussion about it (with location.)

Adding this one to the list too:
              http://www.jamesshuggins.com/h/tek1/...mputer_bug.htm
              First computer bug. :-)
(How many security issues are the result of "bugs"? :-)

Wow....That gives a new meaning to 'bug' doesn't it?

I'm old, I knew that was where "bug" came from. More like an old meaning, not a new meaning. I'm glad it wasn't a condom.

I think we need to celebrate the birthday of the Fire Marshal for Las Vegas too. :>

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

                        Nikola Tesla, July 10, 1856
Greatest hacker, and inventor. Invented the AC systems, crt vac. tubes, ...
                        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_tesla
http://www.parascope.com/en/0996/tesla9.htm <---story about how his coils could destory all computers in the world

Can't forget about the abacus. invented between 2400 BC and 300 BC. This was the first 2-base system. Started a lot of orginal thought.

The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of life, your memories, your attachments.
They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you, he said. They're freeing your soul. So, if you're frightened of dying and... and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth.

Not exactly a specific date we can celebate. What was that opening scene of "Caveman"... 1,000,000 B.C. ... 3:15pm.

                            Exactly the point to make.
Same with the suggestion of celebrating first jpg porn-- we could assume one second after the standard, but then we'd have to consider which standard/revision. I tried a search (google) for first jpg porn posted to usenet, but found no papers, or citations.

I've been populating another test calendar with the above dates. The idea for a "hacker history" calendar was suggested by noid in another thread. Let's see what kinds of annual hacker events and birthday celebrations we can include with it. :-)

So, now we have one primary calendar (Public) and two test calendars (History and Conventions.)

What was that opening scene of "Caveman"... 1,000,000 B.C. ... 3:15pm.
That was a good movie for its time. Kind of like Airplane and Top Secret.

                              I couldnt find exact dates,
                              but:
birthday of Tim Bernes Lee (Man who is generally regarded to have invented the WWW)
Invention of fibre optic cables for communication (judging by wikipedia, this is a long process, but maybe the 2 guys who made the first eridium doped one?)
                              First semiconductor manufacture?
Like quite a lot of things this cant really be pinned down to one day, but you could always set a date.

Having said that quite a lot of these suggestions (including mine) are more computing in general rather than hacker specific. Although you can always argue it either way.
